Hi all,

I have seen some YouTube videos of guys in the states adding a brusa charger to a Nissan Leaf to give it an additional 3.3kw of charging power.

I was wondering, as nissans are now appearing in breakers yards, if anyone has taken a stock 6.6kw charger out of a wrecked gen2 leaf, and fitted it to a standard gen2 leaf with a 3.3kw charger.

This is something I may need to do on soon as I'm not sure if I will have enough charging power to charge the battery in my Nissan e-nv200 in between home to college journeys.
My son starts a specialist disabled college in a few weeks time, and I need to get enough energy into the battery in between getting home in after the morning run, and leaving to collect him in the afternoon. It's a 50 mile round trip.

If anyone has come across this type of project, please drop some info, if not any additional info on the brusa charger install would also be very helpful.

THANK YOU,

ANTHONY

Do you have DCQC fast-charging stations where you live? At least one person has successfully equipped a Leaf that came without QC with this factory-only option. If you have a QC station to use, this would be the fastest way to charge in that time frame, by far.

Hi leftiebiker,

I do have a rapid charge port on the vehicle, but sadly in the uk, especially where I live, no rapid charge port anywhere on route or even nearby.

The nearest quick charge or rapid charge station to me is nearly 25 miles away, and that is also in the wrong direction to the college route I will have to take to get my son to and from college.

thanks.

I tought all gen 2 Leafs with quick charge have the 6 kW charger, at least in US.

I recall that somebody got a 6 kW charger from ebay, and it did fit gen 2 Leaf and charged at 6 kW. I will try to find the tread. He was then trying to add the quick charge port.

There was also the (20kW) quick charger built by Valery (?), from JuiceBox. No change to the car required. $$$

No. The 6.6kw charger was introduced in 2013, so any 2011-2012 Leaf with QC has the slow 3.3kw charger. You are confusing it with this: any Leaf S with a QC port also has the 6.6kw charger. The S was also introduced in 2013, but if an S doesn't have QC, it also lacks the faster charger.

Hi camasleaf,

It would be great if you could find that thread or info.
In the uk, all leafs sold have the quick charge Chademo port plus either a type 1 3.3 kW charger port or a 6.6kw charger, the 6.6 was an optional extra at point of order.
I think on the gen1.5 and 2 the charger sits up front under the inverter, and i am not sure, but think the 6.6 upgrade was just an extra 3.3 sat on top of the existing 3.3 charger, making the assembly alittle heigher under the bonnet or hood.
Don't quote me on that though, it's little info I have managed the get hold of, but it may be wrong, that's why I'm a trying to get good info from the experts here.

Thanks.

Hi,

I just watched a YouTube video of a motor drive unit charger and inverter tear down and it looks pretty difficult, so I'd say by what I've just seen its a no go.

It seems then that the option may be to install a brusa charger as an extra charger in tandem with the vehicles charger, so any info on this would be great.
Thanks.

In Europe the 6kW-charger is an option all across the range. However, the QC-port is usually standard. I believe that it is only the lowest spec (the Visia, the equivalent to S-spec in the US) which does not come with QC-port as standard.

Done alittle more research today, there's a way to install a brusa charger in a booster mode, this mode enables the charger to work alongside the cars existing charger with the same power without any connections to the canbus, so it should be an easier install.
Any info anywhere on this set up?

Thanks

Hi RNM,

I had just found that very same thread only a few hours before you thankfully posted a lin, thanks very much for the info and help.

It is very good to know that someone has indeed replaced a stock 3.3 with a stock 6.6 as a plug and play, it is very good info.
All i need now is a stock 6.6 in the EU or UK that is going for reasonable money and i will definately do it.

Thank you.

Your welcome m8.

If you do it, please take more photos and explain in greater detail than the other guy ;)

I will for sure.

I have messaged superleaf, just to ask if he has had any issues related to the change and if it's all still working fine.
I am hopeful it's a true posting, he hasn't been on here for a while.
I have spoken today to an ev specialist and spoke in depth about how this project, he's not to sure, apparently there are 2 software versions, one version clearly states 6.6 kW, so he tends to lean towards it not being able to be done, although if I find a charger we will try together.

I am on the lookout for a 6.6 kW power module charger, haven't found any yet, have seen a few in the USA but import duties and shipping pushes the price up to a point where the project becomes unaffordable.

Anthony.

Anyone personally know superleaf?

I have checked his profile and he hasn't visited the forum for many months, I have sent him a private message just to ask if the charger conversion is still k and operational before I jump in and try th conversion myself.
From all the forums I have read, superleaf appears to be the only one that has carried out this conversion where a stock 3.3 was changed and upgraded for a stock 6.6.

If anyone mows him personally or has his personal mail could you email him for me please and ask him if all is well with his conversion and report back, I haven't got access to his email details only his private message.

Many thanks

Anthony.

I just did the upgrade too. If you are interested I can share some photos. I have a 2013 Leaf and I bought the 6.6KW charger from US. It took me about 7 hours of work. The space is pretty restricted around the charger. It takes time.

I will add the pictures to the original thread.
