Using the same method as the now-famous Enginer PHEV kit for the Prius, could a secondary battery be used to inject power into the Leaf's HV bus? (i.e. 8kwhr of 48V batteries, 5kW DC/DC to boost to 360-400V for injection onto HV bus) Or is Nissan doing something clever that would "catch" that?

I don't think so. In fact, find some of the threads discussing Phil/Ingineer's propane turbine trailer. I believe he found the LEAF would accept up to an extra 30kWh on the power bus - no need to route through the battery first... I'd link for you, but I'm mobile at the moment.

Enginer now has a kit for the Leaf that does exactly that in 4, 8 and 12 KWh versions...
