DIY Replacement of a Gen 1 battery with a Sunderland built battery

Tue Apr 17, 2018 3:46 am

Hi
I've manged to buy a battery with only 8,000 kms that was in a 2015 leaf. Does anyone have experience with putting this UK built bttery into a 2011 early Leaf with a Japanese batttery?

Unfortunately, this site is a US-centric site w/a few Canadians and others in other countries thrown in. VERY FEW of us have any direct hands-on experience w/battery swapping on Japanese or UK market Leafs.

I've never even ridden in a Leaf in the UK or Japan.

2011 and 2012 US-market Leafs were made in Japan, but we never got any Sunderland batteries.

There are lot of informations about how to do so here.
The place where the battery was made doesn't matter, they're all the same!

So all of the informations about how to do so on this forum will be valid, I saw some youtube videos too. But if you don't have knowledges about electricity don't try it!
It's a battery, there is no ON-OFF button, a short circuit in the battery pack will certainly produce a projection of melted copper and steel just next to your hands (and always too close to your face).

You know this for a fact? There are already numerous differences between the packs that came with 2011 to 2012 Leafs (made in Japan) vs. for 2013 to 2015 Leafs (made in Smryna, TN),

Examples:

http://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=465279#p465279
http://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=465381#p465381

Even the # of temperature sensors went down by 1 between the former and latter. There's a kit required few newer packs to fit in 2011 to 2012 Leafs (search viewtopic.php?t=17168 for kit).

I'm not sure I'd go as far as to wager that the above differences will carryover between the the OP's two Leafs.

Also, the part # and thus the pack are different between early Leafs (e.g. 2011) with no battery warmer and the 2012's that came with it.

I'm not saying, the battery from the 11-12 is no different than the one later, I'm saying for a same year, the parts are the same.

For the reason some people swapped parts from their European car with US parts and the US leafs imported from Europe have no problems finding part in Europe.
I even bet much further when I ordered a charger from a broken ENV200 and installed it on the leaf and it works great.

A battery is made on site, but most other parts are not. So everything must be compatible, more standard, less specific at the end it's cheaper!

Then you are incorrect.

A Leaf built in Japan uses different front brake pads than one built in Tennessee.

Ask me how I know (grrr...).
