 Lots of smart people on this forum :!: Could someone tell me the answers to the following 3 things for the LEAF; MPG, Miles/Kw-hr, and Miles/therm?? I guess the EPA is establishing a MPG for EV's but not sure of the formula. I took a stab at them but want to be sure before shooting my mouth off. Any help for these answers would be appreciated. Thanks :ugeek: .

To compute Miles Per Gallon, you take Miles per Orange, divided by a rusty nails per furlong.
It's approximate, of course. But it makes more sense than MPG.

The EPA formula for EV "MPGe" is on the EPA sticker - see that thread.

They define 33.7 kWh as "equivalent" to 1 gallon.

So, the LEAF, at 100 miles per 24 kWh, would be (33.7 * 100.0 / 24.0), or about 140 "MPGe".

Or, a simple 33.7 times the EVs "mpe" figure.

Recall: mpe = miles per edie = miles per kWh = 100 / 24 = 4.17 (approx.).

So, very close to (100 x mpe / 3) ... and 4.17 x 100 is easy, 417.
Divide 417 by 3 = 139 MPGe! (the number is slightly low)

The window sticker on the 2002 Rav4 EV read city energy consumption 27 kW-hr/100 and highway energy consumption 34 Kw-hr/100.

I don't know what test cycles they used in 2002 but if the city cycle they used in 2002 is close to the EPA LA4 cycle the LEAF should be about 24 kW-hr/100 like Gary mentioned.

Any guesses on highway?

Going off topic, my 1998 Honda EV Plus lease had a listed msrp $53,900. I had sticker shock when I was picking up the car and signing for the lease since I would have pay the license based on that price up front and I almost walked. I am glad I did not of course. The dealer did not mention that in advance and I had never leased a car before.

Somewhat back on topic, I poked around on http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ to see what other electrics they had in the system. Here are all the ones I found, values are kW-hrs/100 miles:

2000 Nissan Altra EV 29 City 26 Hwy Is this right? Better on Highway?
2000 Rav4 EV 29 City 37 Hwy
2001 Ford Explorer USPS Electric 54 City 72 Hwy Did not know this even existed.
2001 Ford Th!nk 32 City 41 Hwy
2001 Nissan Hyper-Mini 28 City 36 Hwy Did not know about this one either.
2001 Toyota RAV4 EV 29 City 37 Hwy No Change from 2000.
2002 Ford Explorer USPS Electric 54 City 72 Hwy No change from 2001
2002 Toyota RAV4 EV 27 City 34 Hwy I wonder what changed.
2003 Toyota RAV4 EV 27 City 34 Hwy No change from 2002
