2014 Battery Stats

Wed Jul 27, 2016 4:32 pm

I thought I would start sharing my battery stats. My LEAF is a 2014 SV with the quick-charge package. It has a January 2014 manufacture date and I bought it in February 2015. It had 67 miles on it when I bought it.

I didn't get LeafSpy until later on. For almost the first year I charged at L1 with just a few QCs and L2s. I installed L2 later on. I've charged to 100% overnight.
9/22/2015 251 GIDs

Odometer 8,176 miles AHr=57.47, SOH=87%, Hx=86.53% 388.44V 9/28/2015
Odometer 15,723 miles AHr=58.33, SOH=89%, Hx=88.37% 395.64V 5/18/2016
Odometer 18,826 miles, AHr=58.72, SOH=89%, Hx=89.23% 395.85V 255 GIDs 7/27/2016

As-of today, I have 13 QCs and 760 L1/L2s and 18,826 miles.

Thanks for sharing your stats Jamieo. I live in Atlanta so we live in reasonably similar climates. I have a 2015 S with QC and, with a bit more than 1 year left on my 3 year lease, have been trying to determine if the "lizard" battery is truly any better than previous batteries. Your data would seem to suggest it is, as my car with almost 20k miles on it is stilll showing 96% SOH and 275 - 280 Gids (my last 2 readings). Just one data point but it is one more that seems to indicate the 2015 battery will last a bit longer than previous model years. This is an important factor for me in determining whether I buy it at the end of the lease or turn it in. Of course price is the other one, so we'll have to see what NMAC offers next year. Thanks again!

You're welcome! I was kind of curious about the impact of having the car sit at the dealer for a year here also. I have a coworker with a 2013 model SL with the following stats:

AHr 55.54 , SOH = 84% 394.57 V Hx 82.31% 29,845 miles. He bought his used last year.

2014 Leaf SV, LED lights and quick charge option. Mfgr date on the door is 3/2014
I have no idea if it is a Lizard battery or not, I don't know how to tell.
From Leaf Spy a few days ago when I let it go to 100% charge.
AHr 63.09, SOH=96%, Hx=96.96,
Odo 24,718, 21 QC, 1437 L1/L2
96.7% SOC, 21.2 kWh, 273 GIDS / 97.2%, 61.01 Ah, 395.70v

It was on a 2 year lease in Ogden, UT. I have had it about a month, put 1200 miles on it. I am in Salt Lake City, UT.

I have never paid to charge it, I have surplus solar credits at home with an L2 charger, and free DC charging in town.

I have a Juicebox Pro L2 at home.
The 2014 doesn't have the 80% charge setting option like the 2013 did. I'm very disappointed in that.
So I set the car timer to end at 9am. I set the TOU 'time of use' setting on the Juicebox to end at 7am. So the car starts the charge so that it will get finished by 9am, but the Juicebox shuts off the power at 7am, and that leaves me most mornings with around an 80% charge. It allows me to let it sit over night with 25% to 50% charge most of the time.

Man those are some nice stats! 96% SOH with 24k miles, really nice. As for the 80% charge thing, I wouldn't be too concerned. Based on what I have read, it seems most people agree that has little to no impact on battery health.

Btw, I travel to Salt Lake often on business. Great city, great people.

These stats are very consistent with my EU 2014 Leaf.
It had about the same degradation when it was at that mileage.

100% charge has some effect on degradation but it is really small. Imagine
extra 1% capacity drop on newer battery packs (like you have) annually.
Difference might be 2-3% per year in hot climates as degradation at both
levels happens faster anyway.

Try to discharge down to 25%. If it gets cold or rainy or whatever, charge to 90%
without hesitation. Also you save money as charging above 95% wastes electricity
due to slower charging speed and constant parasitic load.
Short range EVs <30kWh -- Medium range: 30-60kWh -- Long range: >60kWh
Charging: Trickle <3kW -- Normal 3-22kW -- Fast 50-100kW -- Supercharging >100kW
