Just purchased a new 2017 Leaf! I have a dedicated dryer plug (Nema 14-30) in my garage, nothing else attached to the circuit/breaker. Trying to find the best way to adapt this plug (via adapter/extension or receptacle replacement) so I can connect to a 20 or 30 amp charger (to be purchased in Canada). Any thoughts? Thanks!

By far the simplest method would be to put a 14-30 plug on the EVSE. Is the receptacle going to be dedicated to EV charging or will you be sharing it with a dryer?

If not using for a dryer anymore, it's probably best to install a new receptacle that matches the EVSE's plug. Or even go for a hard-wired installation.

If sharing, keep in mind that 14-30 receptacles weren't necessarily designed for frequent plug/unplug cycles. So starting off with a new high-quality receptacle might be a good idea. Check occasionally for warmth during charging. There are also "load-switcher" equipment that can allow both devices to be plugged in but deliver power to only one at a time. This adds convenience, protection, and reduces wear on the receptacles.

In our house we originally were going to go with a load-switcher approach but our city decided not to issue a permit for that, so we had to take another approach and were able to find a spare 20A for a separate circuit.

Consider the Zencar 32A EVSE, as it can be ordered with a 14-30 or 14-50 plug. Also, because multiple amperage settings are possible, you can charge at 24A (or even 26A).

Search these forums for "Zencar" - there's lot of existing info.

If you decide to purchase a different EVSE, you'll likely need to choose a 20A model as 30A is too high for the 14-30 circuit.
