New Leaf 22kw home charge?

I took delivery of a 2018 Leaf last week and ordered a 22kw home charger as I have three phase available.

A little subsequent reading has led me to believe my Leaf may not take advantage of all that power and may only use a single phase, effectively charging at 7kw, which would be a shame. However I can’t seem to find anything definite. Does anyone know?

The LEAF "S" model without quick charging will accept 3.3kW charge power. With the quick charge package, it will accept 6kW charge power. 22kW would be nice, but just not available on the LEAF for a 240VAC feed.

Only European leafs have the extra 2 pins in the J1772 to accommodate 3 phase. (Type 2)

Your 22kW charger should work fine using the DCFC port, if it is compliant with J1772 standards.
 
Thanks for the replies. Sorry, I should have specified I’m in the UK and this is the new Leaf 2.ZERO model. It has a type 2 connector and another connector for some sort of fast charging at service stations but I haven’t used the latter.

I don’t know of a connector I could use to change the three phase AC power coming out of my new charger to DC which I thought the fast charge port used.

You will need to use the CHAdeMO inlet to achieve a 22kW rate and yes it is 400Vdc.
Do you have the model # of the charger you purchased?

I could always cancel if it turns out I need to buy a CHAdeMO one for Home use (if that’s even possible).
 
I would return it, you won't be able to charge at 22kW.

I'm confused about the 'charger.' If your car has the same as US cars and it is used by the EVSE then it is limited to 6.6 kW.
So far as I can tell, some EVs in Europe can support 22 kW AC charging but the LEAF is not one of them.

Indeed. All US market Leafs have always only included a J1772 inlet for level 1 and 2 AC charging (120 to 240 volts) and can include an optional CHAdeMO inlet. When doing AC charging, the external unit is an EVSE, not a charger: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=262630#p262630.

I believe European market Leafs before model year '18 also included a J1772 inlet but provided a Mennekes Type 2 to J1772 cable since there's no J1772 in Europe and common public and household charging is over Mennekes Type 2. There is no Mennekes Type 2 in the US.

Some EVs in Europe (e.g. Renault Zoe) can utilize much faster and higher wattage AC charging via 3-phase power (also over Mennekes Type 2 connector). I'm not clear how commonly available this is at commercial locations in the US but is certainly not common at home. No mass-market for consumer EVs and PHEV for the US market have any sort of inlet for 3-phase power charging. Renault also pulled out of the US market ages (at least 25 years) ago.

I'd heard some rumors that '18 Leafs in Europe or some parts of Europe might include Mennekes Type 2 inlet but I'm not clear. https://www.nissan.co.uk/vehicles/new-vehicles/leaf/range-charging.html doesn't make any mention of charge rates above 7 kW.

Sure looks like it.

Last page of https://www.nissan-cdn.net/content/dam/Nissan/gb/brochures/Nissan_LEAF-2018_UK.pdf mentions only 6.6 kW OBC. It talks about 50 kW quick charge but that's almost certainly CHAdeMO.
 
Thanks all. I hadn’t realised how US centric this forum was when I found it on google but the replies have been really interesting. I suppose I should have guessed there’d be such a difference in EV charging types between our continents.

I'm not sure what are good UK Leaf forums but heard of I've heard of SpeakEV and Leaf Talk.

What does irk me when I've poked around in the latter (very rare) is some folks there (just like here) mix up and misuse kW vs. kWh. They'll use the wrong units (e.g. incorrectly using kW to talk about battery capacity or energy dispensed when they meant kWh; incorrectly use kWh to talk about charging rate when they meant kW). Unfortunately, when folks persist on doing that, their credibility, strength of their argument and knowledge level (in my eyes) takes a hit.
 
There is a 25KW DC charger for home use. Expensive. I make no recommendations as to its use -- much too expensive for me.

New Leaf supports single phase charging at 32A, 7kW. Your Type2 3-phase-ready EVSE will charge Leaf at full power.
Be sure your house/apartment main fuse (contract based limitation) supports 3x32A.
