Is charging a Leaf on a Nema 14-50 outlet possible?

I'm young and looking to buy my first car - EV right out the gate. My parents own Teslas and have the garage outfitted with, from their quote, "two Nema 14-50 outlets, which is higher than a washer/drier outlet." A Tesla's slightly out of my price range for my hard earned First Car Fund, and a used 2011/2012 Leaf seems like the way to go.

So here's my question. I want to charge a 2011 Leaf in the outlets in my garage, (Nema 14-50). Do I need an adapter? A certain charge cord? What kind? Does the car generally come with one, which would be something I could check on when I buy a used Leaf? Or do I need to buy something separately? If someone could provide some valuable insight, I would greatly appreciate it.

14-50 is a 240 volt outlet that can transfer up to 40 Amps continuously.
So you either buy a 240 volt EVSE for it, or you upgrade the mobile EVSE that comes with the car to support 240 volts.

I think the LEAF you are considering is limited to 3.3 kW max charge rate so a 16 Amp EVSE will be all your car can handle.

volts * Amps = watts
1000 watts = one kW

16 amps * 240 volts = 3840 watts = 3.84 kW

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If your parents have Tesla’s then you will have wall chargers in your garage. Simply by an adapter to use the Tesla wall charger to charge your leaf. Couple hundred bucks.

Tesla doesn't sell "wall chargers". Their EVSE they call a wall connector (e.g. https://shop.tesla.com/ca/en/product/ve ... ector.html).

For level 1 and 2 charging AC charging over J1772, the charger is on-board the car: viewtopic.php?p=262630#p262630. This applies also for Teslas charging at level 1 or 2. The wall connector is merely and EVSE and is actually J1772 behind the scenes.

Either the OP needs to get a J1772 EVSE with a NEMA 14-50 plug (some already suggested) or JDapter (https://shop.quickchargepower.com/JDapt ... PTRSTB.htm) that should work to convert from Tesla's proprietary North American connector (which would be on their wall connector or mobile connector (e.g. https://shop.tesla.com/us/en/product/ve ... ector.html)) to J1772.

Yes. I stand corrected on the name of the device. It is a wall connecter. But the adapter would work for him.

We gave such an adapter and use it Infrequently on Tesla EVSE’s in specific situations but it does work well.

You don't say where you live (there's a place for it in your profile), but you may still be able to find an older 3 or 4 bar "loser" Leaf still within the 5 yr/60k mile battery warranty period that qualifies for a "free" replacement. I built my own NEMA 14-50 to P6-20 (or 30 depending on what you need) adapter cable to use with an (old) converted Leaf EVSE; just so long you don't violate the power/wattage requirements you should be OK.
