What options do we have for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE)? Who builds them, who sells them, what are they capable of, and if they're not available, when can we buy them?

Remember that the Leaf will ship with a Nissan Level 1 in-cord EVSE.

Just the facts direct from manufacturers/suppliers - no opinions or guessing or complaining about plugs.

Clipper Creek is in final stages of bringing a number of Level 1 and Level 2 J1772 EVSE to market.

Level 1:

PCS-15 In-Cord EVSE
Data Sheet: http://www.clippercreek.net/images/ClipperCreek PCS-15 Brochure.pdf
User Manual: http://www.absoluteefficiency.com/LEAF/EVSE/ClipperCreek_PCS-15_User_Manual.pdf

This is a 120V Level 1 device that's set from the factory to draw a max of 12A from a standard 15A 120V outlet.
The device is undergoing UL testing and is expected to be on the market in September.
Equipped with a standard 3-prong 120V plug.
$1325.00

PCS-20 In-Cord EVSE
This is a 120V Level 1 device that's set to draw a max of 16A from a 20A 120V outlet.
Equipped with a standard 3-prong 120V plug.
update: This device is not being made and is not in the UL approval pipeline, but it can be made if there is sufficient interest. It's preset to draw 16A and cannot be 'turned down' to only draw 12A.

Level 2:

LCS-20
Datasheet: http://www.absoluteefficiency.com/LEAF/EVSE/ClipperCreek_LCS-20.pdf

This is a Level 2 EVSE designed to be connected to a 240V 20A supply. It's designed to support a 3.3kW charger.
Uses same enclosure as the PCS-15/20. Must be hard-wired to 240V supply in accordance with NEC 625.
$1650.00

Coulomb Tech has a range of commercial EVSE available.

Their sales page lists regional sales organizations:

I exchanged a number of emails with Verdek Systems from 2 thru 9 July and came away underwhelmed.

All I know for sure from Verdek is:
- Coulomb has a home charging unit
- They're only interested in talking with me if I'm a housing developer that desires to install Level 2 EVSE in new housing units

I asked for unit availability info, home EVSE unit details, and pricing but these were not answered.
I've contacted Coulomb Technologies directly and have not yet received a response.

I contacted Coulomb within the confines of getting one of their "free" chargers. They told me those were only available to Volt and Ford EV purchasers. But I didn't ask about buying.

Yeah - the Volt, Ford, and Smart get Coulomb units under the ChargePoint America program (I think paid for by stimulus funds). The 'free' Leaf EVSE units (also supposedly Coulomb) are under the EV Project (paid for by Dept of Energy funds, primarily).

I believe that NEC 625 does NOT require all Level 2 EVSEs to be hardwired.

Please see NEC 625.13, ... and then the referenced sections: 625.18, .19, and .29 (indoor use).

Yes - this is a place for hard, black and white facts.

I typed that the LCS-20 must be hard-wired because the data sheet and manual from Clipper Creek say it must.

The confirmed evse price ...

http://blogs.forbes.com/velocity/2010/07/27/another-stylish-electric-vehicle-charger-enters-the-fray/?partner=contextstory

The Blink charger will sell for $2,500 to corporate customers and $1,199 for residential customers.

I just got an email from a Coulomb dealer. He said that the Coulomb CT500 home EVSE will be available in early October.. but for $2500. Ouch.

Makes the AV $2200-$2500 "standard install" look like a bargain in comparison. :)

Well the Coulomb CT500 does look a little more complex than the Leviton model. And maybe this specific reseller was trying to pull an 'AV' and price gouge us. Guess we will know more in a month or two as these start to hit the market. I will keep checking back here to see what options we have.

And it's 8.4 kw and money does not go to AV, sounds better already. I'm looking forward to the Leviton pricing.
