Click on the same link today and it reads "99 mile range". Maybe C&D noticed an error and updated their post.

Good catch - they have actually posted a correction as the last paragraph of the article, too. (It's funny -- the URL itself still has "160-mile-range".

The specs aren't nearly as appealing now...

i3 is revolutionary. Not sure how much of that will make to production.

For one, it’s entirely powered by electricity. The flat lithium-ion battery pack is built into the car’s floor, and it powers a 125-kilowatt (170-horsepower) electric motor located between the rear wheels.

For another, it has a pair of “coach doors” on either side, which open to expose the entire interior, without a B-pillar between the doors that might impede entry. The upright shape has strong wedge lines, with a rising window line and the “stream flow” styling theme of the I range, which uses different colors for the mechanical components and the passenger module.

And when was the last time BMW fitted a car with bench seats, both front and rear? The i3 has them, allowing drivers in tight urban areas to park right next to a wall, then slide across the car to get out the other side—unimpeded by the tunnel in the floor, since there isn’t one.

The roof is transparent, and the tailgate (which houses the U-shaped LED rear lights) slides away rather than flipping up.

BMW promises performance that matches the brand’s image, with 0 to 62 mph acceleration of 7.9 seconds—not bad for an urban runabout—and a top speed governed at 93 mph. Because electric motors generate peak torque at 0 rpm, the i3’s responsiveness away from stop should be particularly good. Weight is given as 2750 pounds, about the same as a subcompact hatchback with a gasoline engine.

There will also be an range extender ...

Perhaps most unexpected, BMW says it will offer the i3 with the option of a range extender, to be called i-REX. It will be a tiny gasoline engine—the company gave out no details—that powers a generator that sends electric power to the motor to take the onwards after its electric range of 80 to 100 miles is depleted.

Well, I'm excited. Good power numbers, purpose built EV, relatively light weight, rear drive, nicer looking than I expected.

Anyone else?

Price and something tells me anything with BMW badge will not be cheap...

Surprised about the weight. If it is really carb fiber, why is it still so heavy ?

Also, supposedly 6 hour charging on German std plug i.e. 20kwh or so. Range will be similar to Leaf - and the size will be similar or a little smaller. If the production vehicle is anything like what they show here and the lease is less tahn $500, this will be on my list to get after Leaf lease is over in 2013/14.

One thing that could upset BMW's plans is if others come out with more range by then.

Yeah, it will definately be on my list of possibles after my Leaf lease is up... (although I'm hoping for a redesigned Leaf with a gen2 battery)

I like this a lot so far. Light weight, small footprint, good performance, Right Pedal Regen, intelligent design.

Two questions;

First, starting around $35k means $35k = $35k MSRP or $42.5k MSRP - $7.5 (Fed) = $35k

And second (and I can't believe I even have to ask this), 3.3kW or 6.6kW charger?

Sheez its 600lb lighter than a Leaf!.. and all of that is probably the CF and aluminum.. since everything else is similar to a Leaf. The battery may be smaller since it has less weight to carry for the same range.

How much do you think the steel chassis of a car weighs?

It is one size smaller than Leaf - and has less battery. Maybe not everything is carb fiber ....

what are the dimensions?
Not published - supposed to be 151" long - some 6 inches longer than Mini and 2 feet shorter than Leaf.
"It will be wider and taller than other cars of similar length. According to the dimensions I have now it's 151.4(L), 79.2(W) and 60.51(H), however it's possible the width was given including the side mirrors"

Note that the width is probably with mirrors, so shouldn't be used for comparison.

has anybody seen anything beyond a computer graphic of either car? They've been talking about these cars for two years, and there is still nothing to show. Big fanfare for a press release of more computer images. Very cool images, but does not seem like its going to happen any time soon.

They were shown in person by BMW the other day.

I suppose it is obvious, but BMW really went "out on a limb" with the styling of these. Something new and very "edgy".
It seems like the comments are generally quite favorable.
Actually I am surprised we haven't heard anyone say they hate it yet. Not bad for something so different.

ok, thanks for posting that. I did not see that when I went to the BMW site. I like the styling on the cars. I doubt a production car will adopt too much of what we see here in the concept cars (styling wise), but it is nice to see they have something besides concept drawings.

These are the best pictures I've seen:

From the NY Times.

http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2011/07/31/automobiles/31bmw-slideshow-5.html

I just noticed in the text from the NYT article that the i3 is a four seater. That gives me some pause, along with evnow's comments about the size of the car. More like a Mitsubishi i, than a LEAF, I guess.
