Thanks for the heads up, I may have to go with a milder tint.

I figure the rear quarter and rear doors one tint, and the front door windows a lighter tint

try to duplicate a normal factory tint job, not to dark

the 2011 I looked at recently had very little tinting and shading at all

much less than say on my 2008 honda element EX, from the factory plenty of rear, and side tint

@mxp - I'm also in Fremont and thinking about getting my windows tinted. You said some places gave you ridiculous quotes. Did you try Auto Mall Tint Specialists? I was thinking of going there for a quote.

Thanks.

Yep, they were one of them. You can PM me for more info... I was very specific about making sure the installer was experienced with the 3M Crystalline product. The film is difficult to install on high curvature glass, and an experienced installer is key. So there, the film is not cheap plus the labor requires expertise (i.e not cheap).

I didn't want any of the Suntek films since I had them previously and I did not like them. IR heat rejection was a priority and the 3M Crystalline 70 was amazing given it's not a dark tint.

Yes, it is illegal; having my front windshield tinted with 3M Crystalline, but it was worth it. I have the 70 all round and it does look like OEM glass.

Our other Leaf was done with 3M Crystalline 50 allround and 70 on windshield. Pics here:

Got Crystalline 70 installed yesterday at Affordable Tint here in Tucson. 399 Love the look. and felt an immediate difference on the way home

Now on to the leather install... and perhaps if we can get Weathertek to make a cargo liner. I'd have all the mods I want..

I just had my windows tinted while my car was being upgraded to leather interior. I did 35% front and 20% back to stay within California guidelines. Cost was $160 and this work has a lifetime warranty. http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=5963" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Um, I think it is supposed to be 70% front!

(35% looks nicer, but the police may not agree... )

It seems I've been misinformed by a number of different people who said 35% was allowed in the front here in California.

It has always been my understanding that no tint is allowed on the front side windows in Calif. That is what the officers have told me when I've received my tint tickets in the past and I just had my windows tinted and the installer told me the same.
I just went to the CHP FAQs website and confirmed, however I did see the footnote below. I wonder if this is where the confusion is, perhaps 70% is considered "transparent"?

".....legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced."

Anyone recommend any good LA shops?

Yes. Recently got my Leaf tinted all around, 70% front and 35% back for $275. Chose the next to highest option and I'm real happy with how it looks. I wish I could get a picture up here...what I like is that it almost looks like it came with the car + they did it in my office garage... http://detailwiz.com/window-tinting" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... I live on the west side, but the person who tinted my car told me they have people going to the valley, south bay...you name it. Get Angel if you can, he was really good!

I got the rear side windows and rear window tinted for $99 with a Groupon Coupon. The film used is "Solar Gard Galaxie 5%".
Here is the link for photos.

Great comments on tinting. Can anyone recommend a good tint shop in the Atlanta Georgia area? Maybe not, since we probably have less than 5 Leafs in the city ... lol

I have heard good comments about Sound Proof in Douglasville, in fact, I called them a few days ago and they quoted me $200 for the side windows and back.... pretty high if you ask me. I decided to make an appointment at Rocket Science in Hiram for tomorrow; they quoted me $165 which is still a bit high but not enough to make me feel ripped off.

If anybody has another suggestion, post it here.

The tint looks fantastic! the entire looks of the car is improved and it looks more "grown-up". They honored their over-the-phone quote and did it for $165; I'm now thinking about having a heat reflecting, clear film applied to the windshield.

The technician admitted that he had never installed tint on a LEAF before (I wonder why? ) so it would take him longer that usual. At the end, it took him about 2.5 hours.

*EDIT: Pictures added (32% at the front, 21% at the back and rear)

Courtey Nissan here in Richardson, TX, says he will tint my Leaf with 'Chrome' tint on front, rear and back for $250. He said the maximum legal allowed here is 25% all through. He wouldn't do anything on the front windshield though. And according to him he is giving me a great discount, since I bought the car there and of course I have a pretty face !

Good deal?

I tried to shoot for "Please Don't Hassle Me Cops":

A good idea, especially if you have tint -- If pulled over, turn on your dome light so that the officer can easily see inside your vehicle. Every walkup to a vehicle is a potentially deadly situation for them. Tint makes that a bigger problem. They will appreciate you alleviating that problem.

Hi;
I know we East Coast guys are lagging behind a bit, having just gotten our cars, but we are doing our best to catch up.
Got the windows tinted (finally) on my Super Black.
I really like the way It turned out.
30% Front, 50% everywhere else.
In Pennsylvania the laws are "interpretive", but this should keep me out of most trouble.
We'll have to see.
