I wish gas stations would install CHAdeMO QCs and charge me $10 a half an hour. I would love to take my leaf on weekend trips. I can stop and take a constitutional break for at least 20 minutes with a borrowed newspaper. If they rented it 4 times a day on average I think they would eventually get payback. They don't make anything selling gas but they would probably make 12 bucks off my drink purchases for me and the kids. Sometimes the kids weasel in a $10 toy that cost the store 20 cents. That is more profit then 500 gallons of gas.

I'm not sure where you are, but around here, 4x a day 7 days a week is highly optimistic, at least in the short term. But long term, it really depends on getting the cost of installation low enough for a business owner to see a potential benefit. I would gladly pay a lot more than the cost of electricity for this convenience, but at $10 a session, 4x a day, 365 days a year, that's $14,600/year. It would take several years to recoup the initial investment.

The map and totals trail reality, as usual:

The AFDC USA map now shows 189 operational, 196 planned, of which 146 are "public".

Looks like this map misses ~10 DCs in the SF bay area alone.

As reported here:

...CHAdeMO President Toshiyuki Shiga presented some interesting data about the CHAdeMO network, including information that stated CHAdeMO reached 2,500 charge points worldwide earlier this year. Most of those chargers are in Japan.

CHAdeMO expects that before end of the 2013, some 4,000-ish will be installed worldwide.

But on the slides below, which were also presented at the CHAdeMO General Assembly, we see additional maps of the US and Europe. From these slides its seems the US is now home to 227 CHAdeMO charge points...

And the GM/German car manufacturer Frankenplug block hasn't delivered a single car yet, with one public Frankenplug station between Phoenix and Tucson, and another planned in the northeast somewhere. Woo Hoo!!

Well written article:

The battle between CHAdeMO and the Frankenplug may be over before it even begins in the US. The rivalry in North America that seems to be shaping up is CHAdeMO vs the Tesla Supercharger network.

Ya, where are all those Frankenplug press releases from last year? I'm sure they want to tell us how being late to the market with a competing standard that offers no additional functionality is a "service" to EV drivers (yes, blurb by GM talking head).

DOE map shows 202 in operation, 208 planned for the USA.

The counts from both maps are clearly way behind reality.

They both only show about half of the actual number of SF Bay area CHAdeMOs.

BTW- I just noticed A Pleasanton DC, near the critical 580/680 junction, is now up and running, 24/7.

It wasn't mapped there just a week ago, when I was trying to plan a route to the last BayLEAFs meeting.

It's showing on the Blink Map now, but San Ramon has disappeared. The best part is that it shows as 4 ports, i.e. two chargers. Can anyone confirm that there are in fact two QCs (4 ports) there? Maybe Blink has finally realized that, when all else fails, they can try listening to their customers.

I mentioned this in another thread, but will repeat it here in case anyone missed it. The Blink QC at Simpson Strong-Tie in Pleasanton is just a single standard two-connector unit, with a couple of separate L2s next to it. Biking all around the building complex, I saw no signs of any preliminary work for adding a second QC. Oh, and up through today, both this and the San Ramon QCs have been off the Blink Map, although someone reported using both of them over the weekend.

Charger standards fight confuses electric vehicle buyers, puts car company investments at risk

"While the SAE charger won't be commercially available for months, with Ford, Volkswagen, GM and BMW committed to it, the Combo standard could one day make CHAdeMO obsolete."

All these types of news articles never consider that Frankenplug USA might never get traction, and that it would be Frankenplug that becomes obsolete.

Interesting quotes from Ford and Volkswagen:
* Jeanette Clute, manager of global electrification infrastructure strategy at Ford Motor Co.
* Waldemar Schweigert, who leads in electric drive technologies at Volkswagen
"It isn't as if there weren't benefits at the time for an early entry market for CHAdeMO to be there, but we are working in an open process where all global automakers are involved," said Jeanette Clute, manager of global electrification infrastructure strategy at Ford Motor Co.

Waldemar Schweigert, who leads in electric drive technologies at Volkswagen, added that the Combo standard will be able to deliver charge at 86 kilowatts, versus 50 kW for CHAdeMO, and recharge a battery in a shorter period of time than its competitor.
I'm hoping for ease and simple compatibility to my Model X plug. This was interesting too:
The CHAdeMO organization itself acknowledges that dual charging stations are the best route. "Many charger manufactures will be coming out this year with this dual charger and we are pleased to see that this will help service the full market," Kiho Ohga, a representative of the CHAdeMO Association, wrote in an email. "Whether it makes business sense to adopt both versus one is not a difficult decision to make by the investor."

Looks like the CHAdeMO map has not been updated yet, to show the 306 reported.

The number of CHAdeMO DC Quick charger installed up to today is 3073.

AFDC, still way behind reality, shows 238 installed, and four more planned for the USA.

Not surprising CHAdeMO has taken this position.

Having under-utilized SAE combo charger plugs at some of the CHAdeMO DC sites does no appreciable harm to either CHAdeMO or CHAdeMO equipped BEVs.

...The coexistence
of the two standards in one station is welcomed
by users, as this means more charging stations
for all. Automakers are positive, because this
solution will allow them to compete with EVs
and not with charging standards...

http://www.chademo.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/2013-09-13Pan_European_Networks_article_final.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Whether American public or private DC infrastructure developers will choose to add SAE plugs to CHAdeMO DC sites, of course, will depend on if and when any manufacture actually builds a significant number of BEVs that use the SAE standard.

After hitting 1,000 in Europe,CHAdeMO has a press release updating charger numbers.

Looks to me like Chademo's strategy is now clear, to become a world-wide DC standard, and simply allow the low-volume BEV manufactures (such as SAE supporters in the USA) to add the regional standard plugs to combined chargers, wherever they can manage to force local taxpayers to subsidize their standards.

CHADEMO FAST CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE CONTINUES ITS STEEP GROWTH:
EUROPEAN INSTALLATION REACHES THE 1000 MARK
2013 was yet another year of steep growth for CHAdeMO-certified fast chargers in Europe. The total number
of CHAdeMO fast chargers in Europe has reached the 1000 bar, demonstrating a 70% growth from the
previous year.
A strong growth in the number of CHAdeMO fast chargers installed was seen in all parts of the world. In one
year from January 2013 to January 2014, the number increased:
Japan: 1381 => 1967 (+42%)
Europe: 601 => 1020 (+70%)
USA: 154 => 554 (+360%)
With this, the overall CHAdeMO installation count has reached over 3500 globally, confirming
CHAdeMO as the global leader and the only widely commercialised fast charging technology. These
CHAdeMO fast chargers serve over 131,000 EV drivers, accounting two thirds of the passenger EV market
today*.
Commenting on the continued success of CHAdeMO charger installation in Europe for the year
2013, Jorge Sanchez, Head of e-mobility, ENDESA (President Company, CHAdeMO Association in
Europe) said: “We are pleased to see this result as this is a clear testimony that CHAdeMO fast
charging technology has won trust of investors and consumers alike in different countries in Europe.”...

CHAdeMO fast charging protocol is expected to be certified by the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) in the first quarter of 2014. With the recent entry of other fast charging protocols into the market,
CHAdeMO Association believes that multi-system chargers that are equipped with multiple connectors
should be the answer going forward.

“With multi-standard chargers, EV drivers can simply select, like Regular and Diesel, the right connector for
the EV they drive. Depending on the EV mix of the region, this can be an attractive and practical solution for
EV drivers, investors, and automakers. More than anything, such multi-standard chargers should help
accelerate e-mobility in Europe, which is essential.” affirms Joseph Beretta, President of AVERE-France.

CHAdeMO officially recognized as international DC fast charging standard published by IEC
17 March 2014

The CHAdeMO protocol has been officially recognized as an international DC charging standard by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a leading global organisation that publishes international standards for electric and electronic products and related technologies.

This seemed to be the most recently active CHAdeMO thread.

Not while the Superchargers are Tesla only...and don't feed me this crap about other manufacturers can buy in. None will so long as it's a Tesla monopoly.
