They quoted me $176 to buy a fob plus $80 to program it. I'll post the final total when I buy mine (Dublin Toyota only gave me one). I asked him (at Reed Bros.) if these dealers are selling the extra fobs and he said "No, they always keep one in case they have to reposses the car. Grrrr.

Hi ed5000. Did you get a new key programmed? What is the final total? I'm from East Bay and leasing Leaf 2012 from Nissan Oakland.
Thank you!

Has anyone purchased/used just the key instead of the combo? I'd really love to just have a plain key with the chip to unlock the door and then do the button-push thing. This would work better when going riding or swimming.

I purchased a 2011 Leaf SV with 2 fobs. I also have a 2010 Nissan Cube Krom that uses the same style of fob. In fact they fobs look the same. Does anyone know if I can use one fob for both cars instead of a fob for each car. That would allow me to carry just one fob instead of two.

I purchased a 2013 used a few weeks back, but it only came with one key. Local dealer quoted me $188 for a key and another $68 to cut and program it, for a total of $256. Instead, I bought a brand new Nissan key on eBay for $68.79, and brought it to the dealer for cutting and programming just now. They ended up charging me $65.58. Grand total: $134.37

Hope this helps. ;)

I have a 2015. I bought a 4 button fob that works also on a sentra on ebay for $65. Programing and cutting the inside key was done by a local locksmith for $85. They need to have all of your keys at that time, and they have to make a phone call to Nissan to get codes so they can enter the computer with their machine. So, for $150 for everything, I think it was worth it. Now I have 3 working fobs and keys. I am not sure if having the key with a chip ALONE will let you push the button to start the car. I also have a plain Nissan key on my keyring for $3.99 at Ace hardware in case I have to get into the car when I don't have the fob...

I'd like to hear an answer on this one as well.

Anybody know?

:?:

You can open the car with a key, but you need to have the fob to start it. If the battery in the fob is very low, or dead, you have to touch the fob against the push button before it will start. It's part of the security system for the car. If you could just open the door, push the button and go, Nissan's would be the most stolen car in the country.

The good news is they wouldn't get very far :D

I tested my 2011 physical key. The RFID identification chip is in the fob, not in the physical door key.

Agree a near indestructible physical key with RFID chip embedded in it would have been better.
But they did not design it that way.

Does anyone know if the FOBs posted here for sale on eBay also work on 2011/2012 leafs?

My leaf is a 2015. The key fobs are not just for the Leaf. The important thing is to pull out the key part from the fob you have already and look at the microscopic numbers on the fob.. mine is FCC ID - CWTWB1U840, IC - 1788D- FWB1U840... On google, or ebay, search for your number fob ONLY, do not mention "Leaf". The same fob is used for the Altima, versa, and some others... You should not enter "Leaf" because the fob frequency is the only important number, and they will be cheaper because it is a common fob. I Paid $65 for the NEW fob with uncut key, and still had to get a locksmith with the right computer and make a telephone call to Nissan to set it... It cost me $85 to program it and cut the key.. good luck

But only the LEAF fob would have the open the charge door button, right?

No, the third button down (of 4 buttons) will have a picture of the trunk release, but it will work as opening the front charger door. Mine is like this and works great.

Hi there!

I got my Leaf from US insurance auction. It had a minor front impact, though depreciated to 75%. The bottom line is it has 260 GIDs...and single FOB.

Today I brought my Leaf to dealer for the second key prohrammig. they ordered a FOB for me. They could not receive PINs or similar numbers, had to wait "the main country Nissan importer" to give the PINs or whatever. They could not do that in regular way since the car is for US market but they are able to convert (or retrieve?) PINs just for EU cars only (I am in Ukraine).

At the end of the day (litterally at 9pm) they notified me that the immo was reset and the car does not see neither old FOB, nor new one. Ok, the car is now stuck at dealer.

I read this topic and found that the BCM PIN conversion is rather straight forward. Not more diffcult than cracking a software having a keygen.

They will do other tries to reprogram my immo tomorrow (Saturday). I just write this post for basically two reasons:

- as a precausinary for those who wants the second key in EU having a US Leaf. Please verify your dealer can do that beforehand; and
- if there are any thoghts of how can I assist the dealer (huh?). Does it make sence finding a friendly dealer at US for PIN (or BCM or whatever number) conversion/acquire? Does the SMART card do the conversion or do they need a database?

May be too many questions, And yes, the dealer wanted to charge me $20 for programming...not the best money to value ratio though.

Please help. Or I will drive the other day on gasoline :)

Next day update: now buttons work. Though the immo does not see the FOB.

The other day update: my dealer finally programmed both keys. The trick was to enter my Leaf as EU Leaf, but not the US one into Consult-III (according to manager).

Here is what you can do (and I have done) to go swimming or whatever activity is awkward with the whole fob: remove the steel key from the fob, and put that securely on your person (a zippered key pocket is best), then wrap the fob inside a 4" or so ball of aluminum foil, and place that out of sight inside the car. The foil will block the fob's signal and stop the car from throwing a fit because of a fob inside, the steel key gets you back inside, and once you unwrap the fob, it works once again to start the car.

That sounds as if the "ball of aluminum foil" gets worn out & replaced often. Would an Altoids tin work as well? The lid may not seal electrically, I guess.. will try it this evening.

This thread's 3 years old - any new news? Consensus seemed to be "You need special hardware", and "it costs a lot at the dealer".

Thanks!

May work for old fobs and early Nissans that had an ignition to insert it in and an accessory position.

But not valid for LEAF.
There is no ignition to insert the fob in.
No accessory position.
