How long 'til 4th bar drops?

Sounds like a good find! How many miles does it have? Also, just make sure you are calculating the 5 year warranty from the car's in-service date. As long as you have sufficient mileage, 16 months should be a fairly safe bet to get to the 41-42 AHr range, IMHO.

You might also want to see if the seller will let you get an official battery report from a Nissan dealership, as if the battery was abused (for example, left discharged for a prolonged period of time), it could void the warranty.

Good luck!

@tungsten

My exact conclusion, based on all the readings from this thread.

There are 16K miles to warranty expiration.

According to Nissan Electric CS 1-877-NOGASEV there is NO BOE warranty annotation against it and therefore covered by basic warranty coverage.

Someone suggested I get it in writing from a local dealer which I did and they had no problem doing. They also included a full service history of the vehicle.

So fully charged, the GOM shows 91 miles and LeafSpy reports 64.379 AHr and 292 gids. Went up to 100 miles after a long downhill stretch. But SOH still reads 65%, which is unchanged from my old battery. Hx has fluctuated from 99.86 to 100.07.

Is this normal for my SOH to not change? And to not see an AHr closer to 66?

...
Not normal based on my experience.

Capacity warranty new pack installed August 4th.

Showed SOH 100% immediately and still does.

Capacity showed 66.14 for long time but finally showed a tiny drop yesterday.

Hx held at over 100% for a long time too. But dropped down into high 99.9% range a few weeks back.

My guess is your technician messed up and failed to clear the long term capacity data when new pack was installed.

Once new pack was installed my technician spent about three hours on configuring software for the new pack.

The cell balancing is normal.
Mine did that a lot.
Not sure the new pack is yet balanced as well as the old worn out pack.

But that is understandable.
With the new range the new pack has only once seen LBW.
Old pack saw Turtle and pack disconnect a lot.
That helps with balancing.

@TimLee: Thanks for your reply. Makes sense that something in the software wasn't updated or reset. I'll see if I can contact the technician and ask them if this is something that needs to be corrected. At least I'm relieved to hear that the shunting is normal. Wish I was seeing AHrs in the 66 range, too, but at least mine seems to be stable at 64.38.

I'm not sure how significant the impact is other than inaccurate data from the BMS.

With time it will catch up. But may take months.

The reason and only appropriate use in Consult III of the Clear Long Term Capacity Data function is when a new pack is installed.

Many technicians have NOT understood that and done it when the pack was not replaced.

In your case I think the technician should do it.
Should take less than an hour and be no cost.
Should correct your LSP readings to those of the new pack.

Hello folks,

Amazing thread on dropping that 4th bar, it is fantastic!

Been shopping around for a used leaf and lo and behold I've come across a dealer selling a used one with 9 bars.

Main starts are AHR: 45.05 / SOH 68%

Appears to have been driven in the high deserts of SoCal.

With 16 months remaining on the warranty and based on information contained on this thread do you all think this a pretty good candidate to drop the last bar and quality for a new batt?

Thanks!

Seems great. 45.05 AHR and at 68% SOH? Man, I'm stuck at 72% SOH with 45.40 AHR. Not sure why mine isn't dropping.

Stats:
ahr 49.29
Soh 75%
Hx 55
193 gids
88.2soc
15kwh remain

This info was taken from leaf spy. I've had 2 bars drop but from what I've read I should have had at least 3 bars drop right? I'm a little frustrated because 5 yrs in August is coming up fast.

It won't drop until your SOH is under 72% for probably at least 2 months. I've been at 73% SOH for a few months with an AHr of 48 and I still have 10 bars. I expect it to fall to 72% SOH in the next 3 months and to drop precipitously during the summer here in Arkansas. You'll be cutting it very close for an August expiration.

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify 10th bar drops at 72%soh +2 months? Is the bar dropping related to soh exclusively? I can't seem to find a reliable source on how the stuff I listed relates to the bars. I live in Dallas btw.

Also... if summer is very hot and my soh says I should have lost 4 bars but the computer hasn't dropped it then I'm hosed right?

Unless Nissan allows a good will ouside of warranty either partial or total replacement.

I dropped the fourth bar two weeks late and Nissan did 100% replacement.

But no clear formula on when and why Nissan does or does not do good will.

Just wondering why my LEAF's 10th bar still has not dropped yet. Here are the stats:

2013 S
mfg: 02/2013
12th bar loss: 8/6/2105 31476 mi. 53.94 Ahr 82% SOH
11th bar loss: 5/28/2016 43332 mi. 49.19 Ahr 75% SOH

recent readings:
10/15/2016 48075 mi. 45.75 Ahr 69% SOH
10/22/2016 48307 mi. 45.35 Ahr 69% SOH
11/5/2016 48527 mi. 45.67 Ahr 69% SOH
11/12/2016 48814 mi. 44.96 Ahr 68% SOH

Planning ahead, is there a good chance for the 9th bar to drop before March 2018?
I know I should start managing my miles carefully. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Keep the car in the garage, run the heater, drain to LBW, and charge it back up. Repeat.

The oddities of these Leafs make no sense. I'm at 45.225 ahr and still at 72% SOH. Been stuck at 72 ever since I started tracking with LSP at 47.868 ahr. I've lost 2.6 ahr and haven't lost a single SOH %.

Now that you have the new battery installed I have a couple of questions. Do you give you a brand new battery pack or is it a refurb? How many miles does yours show fully charged at 100% and what is the AHr?

I ask these questions as I have one mfg on 02/13 and the battery is at AHr=43.71 so i expect to lose the 9th bar soon. How hard was it to get Nissan to start the warranty procedure?

Thanks,
Rob

Are you saying run the heater in the car to discharge the battery more quickly, or heat up the garage? If it was real close to warranty levels I wouldn't drive it anymore and try to charge and discharge the battery without putting miles on it as well.

All replacements have been brand new batteries.

66.14 AHr
Miles varies based on driving. But with new battery the Distance to Empty (aka Guessometer) typically showed between 95 and 110 for my moderate driving. Realistic range from100% to Low Battery warning was more like 65 to 80 in warm weather. Around 50 in cold weather running heater.

Once you have lost four bars dealer will do some tests and lots of paperwork. About two hours.

Depending on production cycle 2 to 6 weeks to get battery.
About four to six hours to swap out and do software.

Can anyone explain this to me. My stats are going up. They are a lot higher than what I started with when I started using LeafSpyPro.
I have a 2012 and the warranty is good until 11/23/17. I've been trying very hard but it looks like I'm making it better and not worst.
Also what temp should I try to bring the battery up to everyday and how long should I try to keep there?
I've been able to get it in to the 100F almost every day and to 133.3F three times already. What am I doing wrong? Why is my AHr up 1.3 instead of going down? Thank you for your imput.

Don't sweat it, keep doing what you're doing. 2 months isn't that big of an interval to draw any conclusions. Try to back off from QCing and see if the numbers go down if this will give you some peace of mind.
