Is there any way of determining if a leaf has a 30KW or 24KW battery by the VIN or GVWR?
Curious as I am looking at auctions with very little info.

I wish I knew, all the 2016 s leafs list with a 30wthr battery but when you call they end up 24kwhr
 
You could try this URL:

just append your VIN to the end of that...

If it works, a PDF will load in the browser that shows the original sales sticker for that Leaf. It should list the battery pack...

'16 Leaf S was only 24 kWh for most of the span of the model year. Near the end, they quietly introduced the "S 30": http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1106593_nissan-leaf-s-quietly-gets-30-kwh-battery-upgrade-higher-price

'16 SV and SL were 30 kWh for that entire model year.

OP: The correct units for battery capacity are kWh, NOT "KW".

kW and kWh are very different metrics. It's the same as confusing gallons with horsepower. Think of kW = horsepower, kWh = gallons.

1 hp = ~0.746 kW. And, many .gov sites say 1 gallon of gasoline=33.7 kWh.

Yeah, it's hit and miss...

For instance, this one works fine:

And does clearly state a 30 kWh pack.

Not sure why some work and some don't.
 
Someone on another forum mention 1970kg for 30KWh GVWR and 1945kg GVWR for 24KWh.
in the US i have seen 1902Kg and 2010Kg as the difference between 2013,14,15 and 2016 models
 
Using the 4th character of the VIN is probably all I need (B = 30kWh, A=24kWh), but is there a functioning VIN checker / tag maker? the cpo.nissan one seems to have been disabled.
 
How about a car with a 40kwh battery?
Maybe a "C" for the 4th space on the vin?

The next year or so I may be hunting for an upgrade.

Why is the VIN so important for a 40 kWh car?

ALL '18 US market Leafs are 40 kWh. So far (until sometime in Spring 2019, all '19 US market Leafs are, as well. The '18 and '19 Leaf look very different from '11 to '17 Leafs inside and out.

The 62 kWh e+ has some extra badging to indicate it is such a vehicle.
 
I may end up buying the battery with out the rest of the car attached to it.
Also need to avoid the 62kwh car and/or battery.
If I do buy the whole car it will likely be a wrecked one from an insurance auction and it may be all smashed up and missing bits and pieces that give away the cars option package at a glance.

So far as long as it's a 2018 or 2019 I'm good.
Unless they come out with a special 2019.5 e+, which I don't think is going to happen in the US but no one seems to know for sure.

They might. Nissan's had released a 2004 350Z (I had one of these) and later a 2004.5.

For future reference for any who might have doubts, page 19 of https://testing-public.carmd.com/Tsb/Download/126060/NTB14-059c (TSB NTB14-059c) confirms the A or B in the 4th character as being a means to tell if a '16 S is 24 or 30 kWh. It also has various HV battery part numbers covering '11 to '17 US Leafs.

The vehicle identification number can be located as follows:
"Example VIN : 1N4A/BZ1CPXNC053500

The High-voltage battery type is identified by the 4th alphanumeric character: A or B
A = 40 kWh Battery
B = 62 kWh Battery"
