Yep, you're right. They forgot the cable. I live out of town, there isn't anything close to me. I think the closest was 24 miles. I doesn't help that they delivered it with 34 miles of charge either. I wasn't brave enough to risk it...

I am the new owner of a 2012 SL, with 28.000 miles and 80% SOH battery with 11 bars. $8800 out the door, and had to put new tires on it, but it is very clean. I bought it off a used car lot, and they knew nothing, I think they may have been a little relieved to get rid of the weirdo car. I was able to talk to the former owner, and he worked for the post office, and drove it back and forth to work and seemed to baby it. I thought I wanted a 2013 S, but there is a shortage in Chicago lately. When I first started looking there were a bunch of 2013's under 10K, but lately there have been zero, and I had to adjust my goals because I can only put so much crazy energy into this project. We bought the car about 25 miles from our house, and it wasn't charged, so we asked the salesmen to charge it and we would pick it up the next day. Well, of course, the charge timer was on so it didn't charge and they knew nothing about the override. When I got in and it wasn't charged, my husband was a little freaked, but we went to Walgreen's and found a level 2 that worked, but the level 3 was a mystery. Then I remembered that we could go to a Nissan dealer, and we did, and then it charged and I made it home!! So far, super happy, it's our second car so I can get to work, 30 miles RT, no sweat. Thanks for all of the help on this forum!

So sad update...I don't have a new leaf. Battery is only at 9 bars and car will not make it to work for me. I am having to return it. I went through Carvana, and I'm not really happy about all this.....

Maybe - Find out the inservice date (beginning of 5 year batt warranty)
Get LeafSpy and understand if you're "about" to lose that extra bar soon. You may be on the brink of losing bar 9, and get a brand new battery.

That's a bummer. Sorry it didn't work out. :(

Out of curiosity though, how did you determine that a used 2012 leaf was going to work for you (and then later not work)? From your post history there were no indications on what your needs were or what area you're in. A used leaf isn't a crapshoot or chance, but it's not a one-size-fits-all vehicle either.

New Leaf owner here! Brought home a 2017 Pearl White SV model. Very excited to own an electric car and hope that I never go back to driving an ICE vehicle again.

Solar panels and a level 2 EVSE are in the works.

Cheers

I got my Leaf on May 12th! Coincidentally on my birthday. It's a certified pre owned 2015 SV with 22,000 miles. It has all 12 bars and I don't know how to check SOH yet. I've been enjoying it a lot. I get free level 2 charging at work so it was an easy decision for me. Also, I'm happy to have found this forum. I've already learned about a few features thanks to members posts.

Just got my new Leaf yesterday! A 2017 SV in silver. I'm very happy with it so far, and looking forward to driving it for a long time!

The local power utility here in Ohio is offering a $10,000 rebate which, along with the $7,500 tax credit, basically cuts the cost of the car in half. I had been thinking about an EV for a while, and this was almost too good of a deal to pass up. Happy to join all of you!

I got my blue 2013 SV with 25K miles on Saturday June 3 from Carvana.com for $10250+tax/etc. I haven't plugged it into LeafSpy yet to get a full readout on the battery, but after charging overnight with the trickle-charger, the GOM read 75 miles. It is a later-2013 build (10/2013), so that helps. It's got the QC port and LED headlight package, which is nice, and on top of that it came with the premium sound/camera option (although Carvana didn't list this, it was obvious from the 360 view that the Bose box was in the hatch area--- so I think they may have overlooked this in pricing it. My gain!).

Overall I was happy with Carvana, although they definitely still have some learning to do about delivering electric vehicles-- thankfully they included the trickle charger (unlike the unfortunate poster above), but the car only had 16 miles of charge in it. I said to the guy that that's like delivering a gas car on "E"-- you just wouldn't *do* that! I'll definitely be giving them that feedback.

I'd been researching this purchase for months so I knew what to look for. I ruled out anything built before around mid-year 2013. I live near Chapel Hill NC and commute to Durham (about 16 miles one-way) so its perfect for my needs and hopefully will be for at least a few years.

Juliansleaf -- That's a real bummer about your Carvana experience-- honestly, you probably should have not accepted delivery on a car with only 9 bars, and especially without a charger! Glad you returned it and I hope you can find one that is better suited to your needs.

Anyone buying from Carvana, I suggest that you call the local office the day before your delivery and remind them to charge it. I wish you didn't have to, since they should do it automatically, but given my and Juliansleaf's experience, it seems like a good idea to be proactive.

After looking semi-seriously for a replacement EV over the last several months, I finally decided to just go for it. I'm not good at guessing the future, and it's anyone's guess what prices for used Leafs will look like next month or a year down the road. Pressure from new models coming out (Model 3 and '200 mile Leaf') might drive used prices down, or the general wave of more people buying electrics might cause a shortage of used EVs, and drive prices up.

Either way, today at least I am living in the moment. Found a 2013 SV with 17,500 miles in the local area for $8,888 (plus tax, etc.). Battery at 12 bars/89% SOH, good tires and only one or two door dings. Bonus was that it came with a 240v charging station - plugged it in to a 240v outlet in the garage and works well! Similar SVs in the area were either more expensive, has three times the miles, or looked like they were wrecked/repaired but not reported (nothing in Carfax) in order to not get penalized when returning the lease. Cheaper (but less honest) to eat a $900 repair to the front end as opposed to paying a $3,000 lease return penalty. Just a guess.

Prices and availability were much better only a couple of months ago. There are currently dozens (if not hundreds) of lease-return Leafs at the local auction yard, but the auction houses are only selling a few per week so as to not flood the market and have the bottom fall out of used Leaf prices, somewhat like what happened several months ago.

Basic use will be a daily driver. Workday commute is a total drive of 30 miles (15 miles each way) which is well within the capabilities of the Leaf, even once the battery has degraded. Mild temps in the area hopefully kept the battery from being too abused during its life as a leased vehicle.

For reference, my previous EV was a lead-sled conversion (1989 Ford Escort) done back in 1992. I acquired it about five years ago. Slow is an understatement. Numerous frame cracks from carrying around 900 pounds of golf cart batteries finally made solid the decision to retire the 25-year-old EV. Glad to be finally driving a modern electric!

Yay,

I picked up my 2013 sl last night. It has 29k miles, ten bars and 72% SOH. Battery warranty runs out July 2018.

Primary use for the car is the weekly commute. 20 miles each way (40 total). On a full charge, battery shows 65 miles. I should be good for a few years of commuting. Perhaps I'll get lucky this hot summer and drop the bars enough to get a battery swap.

Thanks for the help when I asked all my questions.

It seems like that would only be a viable strategy if the supply of lease returns was trending downward. If the number of vehicles coming off lease is constant or increasing, holding back inventory now will just lead to an even greater backlog of unsold inventory in the future. But, I was no business major. Am I missing something here?

I bought 2013 SV (no QC) two weeks ago and have been stinking up the newbie subforum constantly. It was basically a San Jose car, so not the perfect battery climate but not too bad. It's more fun to drive than I expected, and at generally 20-30 miles per day it should serve our needs for a long time.

It seems odd that there aren't a ton of 2014's showing up for auction/sale. I asked that question in a post, http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=23974 but I'm not sure people understood my question. There should be thousands, not hundreds of 2014's coming up for sale. I wonder if a significant number of 2014's are going to Canada or overseas. They are definitely going somewhere. If/when they show up in the US market the used prices of the Leaf will soften even further.

This will definitely create some new demand for US EV imports in Quebec, Canada:

Would a 2014 Leaf meet this requirement?
— comes with a warranty of at least three years or 40 000 km, and has been inspected and certified by an automobile manufacturer

To save people reading the article, these are the qualifying criteria:

  • is between three and four years old;
  • comes from outside Québec (to avoid having a Québec rebate on new vehicles applied more than once to the same vehicle);
  • was bought or leased from an authorized dealer;
  • comes with a warranty of at least three years or 40 000 km, and has been inspected and certified by an automobile manufacturer;
  • with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price below $125 000 if bought new

A 2014 Leaf certainly seems to fit the criteria. Are you from Quebec @BuckMkII?

The "was bought or leased from an authorized dealer" one is strange, as I'm wondering how Quebec will "authorize" US dealerships or other Canadian dealerships outside of Quebec for that matter.

No, I'm "from" Denver and live in Seattle. I just found this subject interesting, and couldn't remember/was too lazy to look up what the warranty terms were.

I drove home 65 miles from the dealership where I bought my 2014 Leaf S this afternoon. Because of range anxiety, I trundled along at 60 ish with the AC and radio off :lol: , but made it with 22 miles of range showing. That's probably the longest trip it will ever make as its intended use is local travel. I'm retired and hope the thing will last until I'm ready to quit driving and an autonomous vehicle can take its place to haul me to the grocery store and the doctor's office.

It spent its former life as a leased vehicle in PA and was sold at auction in PA as a lot of them seem to be. I've been looking for awhile and not very happy with some of the dealers I've visited. They seem to think it's perfectly OK to publish a price on their website and then tack on outrageous "fees" when you sit down to buy. I don't argue; I tell them what I'm willing to pay and to call me if they change their mind. They always call with a better offer, but still higher than their advertised price. So, it was a pleasure to find a dealer who had what I wanted, was willing to honor their published price and the additional discount on their site and was less expensive than everybody else.

The S should serve me well. It has the Charge Option, which is the only extra I wanted. I don't need nav and cruise control to drive around town. This week's project is to wire a 240 outlet for Level 2. Meanwhile, I might run down to the free charging station a mile down the road. I saw a Leaf plugged in there one day when I was pedaling by and stopped to talk to the owner. She gave me a tour of the car, let me take a hot lap around the parking lot, and said that the roof of her business was covered with solar panels. Gotta find out the etiquette involved with charging.
