Has anyone had cells replaced?

Just curious if there are any stories of battery packs getting repaired, rather than replaced due to low capacity?

None that have been reported. There were a few packs with defective Cells that did have the cell replaced but not for capacity per se

I would love to understand what constituted the cells being defective. My understanding so far is that the cell voltage test would be the best way to prove cells are under-performing... The big question is, how low do cells have to be, and how many, and maybe even where in the pack as a whole they are...?
Does anyone know for sure? I still think it's best to get the pack healthy by removing the weakest links before the bad cells bring 'em all down. It can't be "that" expensive to warrant the individual modules as opposed to whole pack capacity loss... I don't get why everyone focuses on the capacity warranty...

Charge Forward!! :)

The only incident that stands out in my mind is this one:
http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1082848_nissan-leaf-electric-car-reports-own-battery-cell-failure-via-carwings" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-self-diagnoses-battery-cell-failure-via-carwings/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've actually personally met Rob and rode his in Leaf when they were still very new (WAY before the above happened) while I was still living in WA state. Years later, I leased a Leaf...

Here in Portugal there was a car with two cells replaced. I actually tested the car before the replacement and at 80% SOC those cells were allready at 4,08V, and from 80% to a 100% charge it took only 0,5kW.h from the wall. Total capacity was reduced to 10kW.h from 0% to 100%, and only them he received a call from Nissan to replace the cells. The owner was visiting the dealer to report low capacity for about 6 months!

After the replacement the battery capacity was normal.

I had to dig pretty far back, but this might be of interest with regard to when a cell-pair is considered to be out-of-spec:

According to the manual you can take the readings anytime, and the maximum allowed variation is based on the current total pack voltage:

Code:
Total voltage (V)	        Approx. 360    Approx. 380    Approx. 390
Max - Min voltage (mV)	        230           140             135

so at 373 volts you would have had to had a variation more than 140mV in order to be out of spec. 23mV is pretty well balanced.

Service manual EVB page 129.

I have not. But I have noticed that on my new-to-me 2012 (I am third owner, it's 2017) that according to LeafSpy, a few cells (6) are noticeably worse than others. Not sure what to do with that info yet.

CVLI test? I found these 2 threads.

Google for site:mynissanleaf.com cvli test to find more.

The guy at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=21700 got a module replaced: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=458180#p458180.

When i got my 2012 used, it had a serious problem, was only getting about 18 miles on a full charge, but showed 10 bars.
I didnt have leafspy right away, so no pics of what the situation was, but I took it to my local dealer and Nissan had him tear the battery down to replace 2 modules. Those 2 have always been out of balance with the rest of the pack until recently when I have been driving it hard to try to get the pack down to 8 bars to get it replaced under warranty.
I finally got the 9th bar to drop today, warranty date is June 23rd, and only 43,731 miles, so I dhould be safe

the 2 really high cells in this LeafSpy cap are the ones that were replaced. Whenever I ran the pack down to shutdown, those would always be high by several 100 mv

Actually, it appears that the dealership only replaced one module (module #29). Each module contains four cells: two parallel pairs in series.

Congratulations! Enjoy your new battery.

I had I think 2 cells replaced, I'd have to look back through my prior posts for the details on what they did.

I had a problem where my charge level reported by the car would suddenly drop from 90+% to VLBW and the car would go into turtle mode. Plug it in and it would very quickly pop back up to the original charge level. Took to dealer and their diagnostics didn't find anything. They said I must have charge it on an improper line. Happened a couple times. Finally managed to record video of the dash as it happened. Once I showed them the video proof, they agreed there was a problem. After having it a couple weeks, they diagnosed a couple cells and connectors were bad and replaced them. Took a long time but it has been perfect ever since.

Found my earlier post with the details of what happened and what the fix was:

http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=16082&hilit=turtle+mode&start=10

That was over 3 years ago and no problems since, so I think I can reasonably conclude they finally diagnosed and fixed the issue.
