30 kWh battery in 11-12 or 13-15 Leaf?

Hello everyone,

I drive a 2013 Nissan Leaf in Germany and normally I only write in the german leaf forum goingelectric.de so please excuse the tough german slang.
But the goal is the same, we would like to get an battery upgrade (30kWh) running in older Leafs 2011-2015.
I would give you a short overview over the attempts we made till now:
We started in the end of last year, as it was possible to get a 30kWh battery pack as a spare part in Europe.
A guy (k-siegi) with a 2011 Leaf ordered it and with the service manual we made a adapter for communication connector. The HV Connector was the same and the PTC Heating connector was left open with a bridge in the Harness detection. The mounting points of both packs are identical.
After powering on the car we noticed, the display was toggling between the „old“ values of the 24kWh Pack and the 30kWh Pack. The car refused to drive.
After that the 24 kWh pack was put back in and the errors were cleared over Leafspy.
Then the car was the same as before.
Meanwhile 30 kWh pack is running in a boat on a lake in Germany.
After that k-siegi ordered the suitable 24kWh pack.
It was the first time for the garage to pair a new pack in the leaf, because no one did an battery pack replacement in our surroundings.
After that the old 24kWh pack was disassembled, the cells sold separately and the BMS of both packs 24 kWh and 30kWh was analyzed by another guy who had some experience from a Renault Fluence.
The goal was to find the capacity of the pack and the VIN in the EEprom and modify it.
The can protocols of the both BMS were logged and compared.
If someone is interested in the details have a look at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KFzM2fNLFqYZahMh5SXXQs6ifIavcT7pSLsWQhOzu-U/edit#gid=0
But unfortunately the BMS didn't show up the Capacity or VIN, so this was a dead end.

Has anyone a suggestion how we could achieve the goal?

For Nissan it would be easy (only an adapter and a firmware upgrade) and many owners would be happy, but I fear Nissan aims to sell new cars instead of offering an upgrade as BMW and Renault in Germany.

I always figured the vin matching nonsense was just that.

A swag is that it's a checksum thing or a sn thing.

Ah well

Having followed in a few other people's footsteps and got a 2015 24kWh G2 pack working in my 2011 G1 I'm eager to get my grubby fingers on the 30kWh and give it a try. I have time, facilities, some knowledge & skillful friends. If anyone hears of a bent 30kWh car in NZ please send them to me!

Hi. When you say you got a 2015 pack working in your 2011 car, did you use the original 2011 BMS/LBC that was swapped into the new pack or did you use the 2015 one?
We're all ears!

Sorry folks, this one slipped my notice. I used the BMS/LBC from the original pack.
Here's my overview on what's involved to do the swap:

I've posted about this more in the thread "Anybody with 2011 or 2012 interested in upgrade to new battery?" http://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=21997

I also hadn't remembered this thread and so asked a question that belongs here on the above referenced thread. Any idea how to move messages or the best way to tidy it up?

I'd like to say thank you! That was very educating!

MOD NOTE - I moved those posts here.

Has anybody made any progress with this yet?

I am now running a project to design and build modules with greater capacity than the original Leaf modules. I still have not found out what the LBC/battery computer does if it gets above 100% SOH. If the project is succesful we're looking at 35+kWh from a pack. This will make the SOH 145%. I am lacking in CAN skills so any input from those who can help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, I got a 30kwh battery working in a 2014 Laef. See here - last posts from jsa061

This stuff is above my pay grade, but I do recall a few stats in which the SOH exceeded 100% by a few percent, with nothing happening as a result.

Part of that I believe is due to moving capacity from 2011-12's and 2013+
