So, after 6 years it looks like I finally need to replace the 12V battery. If I connect battery charger to battery cables maintaining 12V to car while I change the battery. Will that allow me to avoid all of the various resets called for in the manual.

I wouldn't try any "tricks" to replace the 12v.
Obey the 5 minute rule (or whatever the manual says) before replacing, and just bite the bullet on the few things you have to reset (like the clock); it really isn't that much.

Would a 9 volt memory saver plugged into the cigarette socket work! https://www.amazon.com/Powerbuilt-648539-Computer-Memory-Keeper/dp/B004BW9J1Y/ref=pd_sbs_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=BAVAA91NSTCDFP3JTRVP

The accessory socket is dead with the car off, and you want it off to change the battery. A 9 volt battery connected directly to the battery cables might work. People have done what you want to do, so let's wait for one of them to post here.
