You would probably need the kit mentioned at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17168.

There's also pairing of the BMS inside the pack w/the car. If you want to swap your worn battery with a used replacement battery w/o going to a dealer (which may not help you much or be able to), read posts by Cor at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=21997.

Yes you can swap gen2 batteries into a gen1 car without any Nissan intervention.
A guy on YouTube has done it and documented the process.

Great Info! Thanks.

I was planning on putting the 2013 batteries into the 2012 case until I complete my project and then put them back, but it looks like lots of work to swap them out. I read somewhere that the 2013 packs are sealed differently and that they get destroyed when opening them..... Maybe I just read it wrong?

Anybody know if a 2012 case will bolt up to the mounts in a 2013 chassis?

There is an adapter kit required to mount the 2013+ battery in the 2011/12 model. Based on that, I would say the 2012 battery will not bolt up to a 2013. Swapping battery packs requires dealer support to program the car to recognize the BMS in the battery pack. Taking the cells out of a 2013 case and transferring them to a 2012 case (using the original BMS) gets around that problem, and gives an older model new life, but is quite a project. From what I have read, the 2012 case is resealable, but the 2013+ is not.
