Hi. Very first post. Our SV is a 2016 30kwh model, born 10/2015, we bought 12/19/2015 with 100 miles. I would say we push this car to the limit --- we drive 84 miles round trip each day, with an L1 trickle charge in-between for 8 hrs; then an L2 charge back to 100% each night. We drive all highway miles, generally 65-68 mph which is crazy dangerous on Florida highways since no one goes that slow! And yes, Florida -- We just had a super hot summer, AND we have to park the car during those weekday charges in an un-shaded paved lot. With that said, our SOH is 60.63%, AHr 48.19 and it has 39,119 miles. We have 9 bars. GOM [new lingo I have learned, so proud of myself] is 65 or so after a full charge. Frequently reach the turtle warning on our daily trip home, and go past it once in a while--but try hard not to have this happen. From this forum, we expect our 4th bar may go around ahr43-41 or so..? Which may not be till the summer, but there are too many factors at play, that it's seems difficult to say that for sure in our case.
Here are my questions: We didn't realize we were supposed to go for battery checkups each year, could that be a big problem?---should we go to the Nissan dealer NOW and get a reading and start planning for the new battery with them? We probably will need that new battery right away, and it takes a while to order/install from what I have read. It says in the warranty Nissan doesn't have to give us a battery that has 12 bars but anything over 9--- how often does that happen? Seems like people would just be coming right back for another battery if they were doing that. AND...just curious about the brand new 2018 battery that has a range of 150--- does anyone know if that is going to fit into previous year 30kwh vehicles, or is the battery now completely different? I heard somewhere Nissan sold the battery making to someone else?
your stats are already below others who dropped 9th and got a replacement, so you should not have long to wait.

The battery test is not a requirement for replacement.

The AHr 43-41 you mention is more for the 24 kWh Battery.

If you haven’t had the annual battery check I would go ahead and schedule it. Make sure you talk with one of the Service Mgrs/Staff familiar with this test before you go in and ask the turn around time when you make the appointment (the first time I went at a 10am appointment they said it would take all day, so I left and had to elevate the issue all the way to Nissan Customer Service to resolve. Some dealers are better than others).

And, Yes start the dialogue on the battery replacement, confirming the dealer you take your Leaf in for the battery check has also replaced batteries in the past and is experienced.

Thank you for the replies. I am going in for the service 1/24 and then I will post what I learn--I plan on staying at the dealer while they do the testing. Our 30 kWh battery Ahr is now 45.76. Just barely making each leg of our daily commute, so until that 9th bar drops it going to be a challenge. I may have to start visiting the Nissan dealer every day and getting an L1 charge since the trickle isn't giving us enough anymore. I am also eager to see when I do get a replacement battery if it is indeed a NEW or 'OTHER'. If we don't get a NEW one, we will be back into the dealer pretty quickly for another replacement, but I agree the language of the warranty does not state it has to be NEW.

From what I have seen so far AHr from 46.27 to 52.1 or SOH from 58 to 65 drops the 9th bar. It looks like it has been less than a month since you dropped to 9 bars. Someone once said there is also a timer that says it only drops 1 bar in a certain number of days, so you just may be waiting for that to go. I bet you only have a few weeks at most.

What did you learn?

Feb update on battery stats. Actually there's been almost no change from Jan apart from dropping the third bar in early Jan. Mileage stands at 39550 mi. 52.81 AH, 246 GID's, 67.70% SOH, 59.15% Hx. I'm now charging the battery at every opportunity and keeping the battery at full charge overnight in hopes of forcing the fourth bar to drop. Doesn't seem to have made any difference though. I'm starting to think that battery degradation is only a function of time and temperature. If true it doesn't bode well owners of 30KWH cars, Everybody is going to have replace their batteries before the warranty expires and some of us are going to do it a couple of times.

I haven't read all of the posts in this topic, although I am familiar with the problem with the 30kwh packs. Is there any chance, from what has been observed, that some 30kwh cars have "good" packs that have high SOH readings when new, and deteriorate slowly, and some have "bad" packs that start in the low to upper 90's SOH and deteriorate rapidly? And a closely related question: if a used 2017 (build date early 2017) with low mileage has a high SOH now, does that predict anything...?

There is that possibility but its the least likeliest cause. Cell manufacturing is a highly controlled process but some variances will occur as in any process. Have no idea what Nissan does or even can do to screen packs other than verifying basic operation, checking for shorts, etc.

One factor that seems obvious is what happens after car leaves factory. Time of the lot seems the main culprit in many cases. I have been lucky in that all 3 of my cars literally spent no time on the lot with 2 not realistically spending ONE day on the lot.

I have not noticed new owners complaining of bad packs when new, except in cases like mine where it was close to a year from build date to delivery. Mine was at 90%, but that is not unusual for a 1 year old Texas car.
Time and temperature seem to be the highest variables for degradation. Not so much miles or QC.

It's a shame I can't get dealers to check capacity on cars on their lots. There is one new Silver 2017 SV with Premium in your state, one in Texas, and a (white, unfortunately) one near Boston. Also a nice red used one in Burlington VT with 2400 miles on it. I've decided that if it's possible to get one with a non-degraded pack I'd rather have a 2017 for less money than a 2018 with fewer features I like and a lease payment approaching $400.

if the range works for you, it will be a bargain but both the LEAFs in WA came from somewhere else because we had zero for several weeks so they were imported from somewhere else... probably from down south.

also keep in mind, last production date for 2017s was in like Aug ? so all of them have been sitting somewhere

Seems like not many updates have been happening to http://www.electricvehiclewiki.com/Real_World_Battery_Capacity_Loss#Loss_of_four_battery_capacity_bars_.2833.75.25.29 and I don't see any 4 bar 2016 30 kWh losers there yet. (I'd do it if I find some free time...)

Here are links to the 30 kWh 4 bar losers I'm aware of, so far. Please chime if I'm missing any 30 kWh 4+ bar losers, made mistakes, double counted someone, etc. I've included their initials or MNL user name to help avoid confusion or duplication.

Lost my fourth bar 2/15/18. Port St Lucie FL...2016 SV 30kWh battery. AHr 45.41 SOH 57.13% Odometer 40,945. Go to dealer Monday to order replacement battery.

Add another 4BL to the list in Orlando.
Do we have any more details? It can just be a pointer to a post on MNL, another forum, Facebook, etc.
In service May 2016, I think about 18k miles, will confirm that. Family member not on MNL, it's complicated.
Will be contacting the dealer next week to arrange a warranty replacement, hopefully no issues with that. Probably going to just dump it for a loss after that and pick up an ICE, when you factor in the tax credit it wasn't horrible but not great either.

I think it is pretty sad that you would have to wait to almost 50% capacity to get a replacement. Mine is at 53AHr @ 16,500 mi so I guess I have a ways to go.
