Unlike when people own their car and battery, this gives car companies (or battery suppliers) an economic incentive to develop and offer upgrades. The car companies would still prefer to sell you a whole new car, but at least they get some of the money from people who can't/aren't willing to buy a whole new battery, and who in any case won't accept a car that has to be thrown away after a few years of use because it no longer meets their needs, or will be obsolete within the same time frame.

I don't follow this car closely since we can't get it in the US, but the video at https://www.facebook.com/Engadget/videos/10156041490887370/ (only 5:05) was the first time I'd actually seen any details about it in operation. Unfortunately, he doesn't go into a lot of detail about charging speeds in the video and he's probably quoting the WAY inflated NEDC range.

Nice video but looks like a subcompact by American standards. I am renting a Corolla right now which is considered a mid size car and it has a lot of rear leg space so guessing that car would struggle here making the decision to keep in out of US a good one.

I guess we all need to shed a few pounds. :roll:
