Tesla UMC charger used in New Nissan Leaf?? YouTube Video

Fri Apr 13, 2018 11:12 pm

Hi. Saw this video, demonstrating the direct plug-in of a Tesla charger (level 2) to a Nissan Leaf. See link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8Y99Iqq9_Y

I am aware of adapters on the market for such a purpose, so I'm confused by how this was managed.

Saw one other YouTube video where a BMW EV owner did the same thing. Is this a European charger variation which permits this to be done?

I believe some European 2018 Leafs now come with a Mennekes Type 2 inlet for AC charging instead of J1772.

Teslas in Europe include a modified Mennekes Type 2 inlet for charging instead of their proprietary North American connector. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_2_connector. I say modified because IIRC (Tesla folks, please correct me if I'm wrong), Tesla Superchargers in Europe use the same Mennekes Type 2 layout but their pins go deeper and only can go deeper into Teslas (with deeper inlet).

It makes that sense European Tesla mobile connectors have Mennekes Type 2 connectors.

I didn't watch the other video, but many/most(?) European EVs/PHEVs (except 2011 to 2017 Leaf) include Mennekes Type 2 inlets rather than J1772. I'd imagine that ALL European-market EVs/PHEVs that have CCS DC charging capability include Mennekes Type 2 inlet for charging, since Combo2 is the CCS variant used there, not Combo1 aka SAE Combo.

We charge our Leaf and smart infrequently using Tesla EVSE’s in a few specific locations. We use the adapter though. Works well. On the second generation Tesla wall connecter there is a 30 second delay as the handshake is done. Handy.

3 KW?.... I think I would select the nearly as effective solar panel option

But as nearly all things go... it doesn't in the US of A.

Gee, perhaps the folks that design these systems can somehow make them even more confusing. More sporting that way!

Thanks for the explanations.

Found a pic of the Tesla connector with a Mennekes plug at the end:

Well, it's no different than any other technology with no previous history. Remember VHS vs. Beta? Or HD-DVD vs. Bluray? Heck, during the early days of electrification, there was even a battle between AC vs. DC, with Thomas Edison infamously electrocuting an elephant to show how dangerous George Westinghouse's AC electricity was (like that wouldn't happen with enough DC current as well). Today we see that vestige in how the US/Canada and a few other countries use 120 or so volts while most of the world has gone with 220-240 volts.

While I am hardly a Tesla "fanboy" there is a bit of genius in that connector. Small in size yet capable of fast charging.

...to show how dangerous George Westinghouse's AC electricity was...

That was Nikola Tesla's alternating current. Westinghouse was just the funder and the man who built the infrastructure.. Ironic to have to mention that in this topic.

While Tesla may have invented it, Edison specifically targeted Westinghouse in that stunt, since it was he, and not Tesla, that was a financial threat to Edison. But my point was that "format wars" are not new, and long pre-dated video cassette technology.
