I downloaded charger information from the AFDC website (highly recommended !), filtered the data to Tesla and CHAdeMO and grouped by year.
This Google spreadsheet has the raw data I used
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/128cGSccFHP482wP4yl-y0FmO70v7i4kVoNeizU_nWo0/edit#gid=1648882880
Those who want to play can make a spreadsheet copy.

The total number of plugs are not too different between CHAdeMO and Tesla -- about 4000 for the former and ~ 5000 for Tesla. The Tesla trend is well depicted; the CHAdeMO is not because 3/4 of the plugs do not have the installation date. The pessimistic reading is that CHAdeMO got off to a great start early this decade and has dropped to a trickle in the last few years. I think this is about right but unfortunately the AFDC data cannot confirm the impression. The kind folks at the DOE do mention that reporting of installation data with number of plugs has been mandatory since 2014. This gives me more confidence in the data from 2014 onwards.

The much needed SC in Ft,. Stockton, TX, on I-10 between Van Horn and Ozona, finally started construction on Sept. 4th after being in permit status since Dec. 1st, 2016. Hopes are that the valuable Pecos, TX SC (now 313 days in permit status) on I-20 between Midland and Van Horn will also start construction soon.

The Supercharger network is a major and unrecognized strategic advantage that Tesla has over other EV vendors. And it is a smart marketing expense.
Nice write-up. My only minor complaint is the use of the word unrecognized above.

It is recognized by owners and that's about it in practical terms. The general non-EV pubic has little awareness of it and the advantages.
I've also noticed that hyenas are generally unaware of the Supercharger network. C'est la vie.

Interesting news about Fort Stockton. That has been a glaring hole in I-10 for a long time, as you know. Wonder what caused the delay?

All sorts of musings on that at TMC, but no hard info AFAIA. After Pecos, Wichita Falls is the most glaring SC lack in Texas, and Tesla's been claiming that they would build there for I think it's two years now. I still have no idea why they built Childress and did nothing about W.F., which is both more useful and more necessary.

There have been proposed stations in Seattle area going on two years now that have still not broken ground...

Yes, Seattle and San Diego are large metro areas that have been underserved by Supercharger Stations. Two years ago I had to find L2 charging in the Kirkland area to be able to get back to Centralia. It is a bit better now, although Bellevue being completed would be a big help.

San Diego has finally showed some progress with the opening of the A Street urban Superchargers downtown and the recent opening of 20 urban Supercharger stalls in Carlsbad the week before last. I believe I was the first out-of-state car to charge at Carlsbad, on the day after opening:

^ Supercharging in Carlsbad CA on 28 September 2018

The first San Diego Supercharger Station in Sorrento Valley (Qualcomm) remains jammed nearly all day (a line of ten cars was reported yesterday) but there are now other options for Supercharging in San Diego County, at long last.

Yeah, its a real head scratcher. Sales here are probably #2 behind CA so the demand is overwhelming here. Centralia doesn't seem "too bad" (with 20 plugs, that helps although I have seen them packed on weekends) but North and East of Seattle, SC's are jammed all the time.

Adding 2 locations of 10+ plugs each would barely make a dent.

Just went to the new SC in Daly City, CA. Not on the map yet as open but it is and looks like 45-50 plus stalls! I think this is larger than Kettleman City.

Will it have solar canopies and a lounge like Kettleman City?

I sure liked the shade from the solar canopies in Kettleman City and Baker — it was 101º in Baker when I was there recently. Perhaps Daly City is too cool and foggy to need solar canopies.

Yep. Daly City's on the San Francisco peninsula, so it doesn't get very warm, and fog is the norm in the summer. While PV will still work there, you don't need it for shade: https://www.google.com/search?q=dal.....69i57j0l3.3332j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Ft. Stockton and Pecos are finally open!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yciX2meIkXI

Still need either San Antonio or Boerne for those with smaller batteries who are just passing through on I-10 rather than spending the night there, so they don't have to detour over to San Marcos, but these two sites were long anticipated and much needed. The (mostly) snow-free I-10 X-C route is almost done.

For those who don't go to or poke around "TMC" much, when future Supercharger installation sites pop up, often threads are started and people post observations as work progresses.

Examples:

https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/supercharger-south-san-jose-location-found-construction-started-aug-2018.125388/ - if you jump to post 54, you'll see there are over a dozen of the urban type (72 kW max output per unit) Superchargers

Aside: Are you a Tesla owner now?

a) On the 'Changes' page there is a link to the TMC forum for each site in-progress or opened.
b) On the map you can click on a site and use the 'discuss' link to go to the TMC forum.

Via IEVS:
Tesla To Double Supercharger Capacity By End Of 2019
https://insideevs.com/tesla-double-supercharger-end-2019/

My comment at IEVS on Elon's claims:
Why on earth anyone at this point would believe Tesla’s claims about how many SCs they’re going to add ‘next year’ is beyond me. After all, they claimed they would have 10k stalls at the end of 2017, and fell more than 1,600 short of that (8,352 per supercharge.info), not to mention that they claimed they’d get to 18,000 stalls at the end of this year. Actual worldwide total as of 11/18/18 per the same source? 11,361.

Tesla has overclaimed the number of SCs they’d complete every single year, typically by 30% or more. This year looks to set a new record for them for under-performance, unless anyone thinks they’re somehow going to complete 6,600+ SC stalls between now and the end of the year, when they’ve managed 3k YTD. Elon might as well claim that they’ll install the first SCs on the moon by the end of this year, and on Mars in 2019 – it would have about the same credibility.

Anyone notice that his thread is 90% comprised of a few posters that don't own a Tesla and don't likely post on TMC. It also comprises the majority of posts on MNL .

What is 'it' ?

My impression of MNL is that a small group of very active posters account for the majority of posts. They seemingly do not tire of arguing with each other although the occasional thread asking if a used LEAF is a good buy adds spice.
