Has anyone put the car into reverse or park when driving?

I have been impatient a couple of times and put the car into "R" while moving > 5mph forward or "D" while going > 5mph in reverse, and the Leaf seems to put on the brakes while going into "N" rather than obeying my command. Has anyone else noticed this? Also, holding up the emergency brake...

How is the 12V battery recharged? Max amperage?

Thanks, Ingineer -- great info., as usual! I didn't realize about the current sensor on the (-) battery lead. Is there a similar problem connecting to the (+) battery terminal? Fuse amperage or something like that? I don't know where else one would connect.

How is the 12V battery recharged? Max amperage?

Should be clear between "Off", "ACC," "On," and "Ready" states. Only the "Ready to drive" mode engages the traction battery and continuously supplies 13.5volts even after the 12v battery is charged. What's called "On" state in the manual is arrived at after two pushes of the power button from...

Power use at a stop light

You are right of course. I realized my mistake after posting. Anyway, the Leaf's is an AC synchronous motor with a permanent magnet as the rotor, therefore brushless. When stopped, it operates in DC mode in a sense, since the field in the stator is held constant. The AC frequency is in...

How is the 12V battery recharged? Max amperage?

You should be OK with the Leaf fully on and in park. The DC/DC converter will keep the 12v circuit energized at about 13.5 volts once the battery is topped up, and will drive your DC-AC inverter for as long as the 400v main pack holds out. (Probably a good idea to monitor it, but the Leaf will...

Power use at a stop light

One of the interesting things about good quality DC motors is that they use very little power while stopped, even if they are energized. I'm not saying Nissan *doesn't* turn off the motor while sitting stopped with the brakes engaged, but it wouldn't make a lot of difference if they didn't...

    Carwings down?

Just posted a comment on the Xatori blog where they announced their GreenCharge app <http://xatori.com/blog/greencharge-launched-today>. It's moderated, so my comment hasn't appeared yet. I also sent a plea the "contact" link at the app's website <http://www.greenchargeapp.com>. I hope they...

    Vacaville L3 Chargepoint

L3 stations will be welcome wherever they show up along major freeways, especially spots between distant population centers. BART is a good place for L2 EVSE's. If you're caught running out of juice due to unforeseen circumstances, pulling into a BART station and catching a ride the rest of...

    iPhone app not working? (1/5/11)

I am having the same problem with the iPad app. It's been giving me the "an unknown error has occurred" every time I attempt to log in. It was working for many weeks before this happened. I have tried removing the app, restarting the iPad, and reinstalling it (in that order) to no avail...

use of solar panel at spoiler on roof?

I replied to this once, but my post got lost(?) Thanks GeekEV for the tip -- I tried it and indeed the solar panel provides voltage to the system with the battery disconnected. Covering the panel causes the voltage to drop from 12 (or so) down to 1 or 2 volts, proving that the panel *is* doing...

use of solar panel at spoiler on roof?

I've been attempting to measure whether the solar panels are charging the battery or not. I have full sun on them around noon and am monitoring the 12-volt battery at around 12.62 volts on my digital voltmeter. Covering the panels doesn't change the voltage at all, even after waiting several...
