I started looking into the cost of getting it shipped to Miami where the dealer said they would be able to service my car under warranty. The cost was going to be at least $1,200 for shipping there and back, not including any customs, brokerage, duties on the service cost, VAT etc I was probably looking at about $3K. That's assuming they could fix the problem completely under warranty. In the middle of doing this, suddenly and without any warning, my car started acting normal again. I have zero explanation for this and I am 100% waiting for it to start happening again but for the moment I'm pushing that thought down and enjoying my leaf.

Check with a knowledgeable Customs Broker, my experience as a Trucker, is that stuff brought in for short term and returned don't require duties. That said I am not a Customes broker and don't know all the ins and outs of the laws.
I do know, however that it is important to get any paperwork in order before you cross the boarder, or it will be treated as a "normal" import.
I know when a brought a high value boiler to Canada for short term rental, I stopped at US customs and had it documented on the way out, and that paperwork was used to bring it back in dutyfree.

Agree with ^^^. My company had a product that would come in for repair from many countries and there were never custom fees or VAT when shipping for repair or calibration. Maybe an automobile is a different case but it really shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks, the issue is not with US customs or duties, but with The Bahamas. There is a duty on most things imported (some are exempted but all have 10% VAT) and in the case of my car that was already imported with duty and VAT when I bought it, the duty would be on any improvements and even repairs. Our cost of living is very high because of this tax structure. I appreciate the advice on the US side.
