Thankyou denwood and cornbinder for chiming in with your experience. I could check the axle nut torque, but I would need to rent a large torque wrench from the parts store, and those things are not handled properly or calibrated, so it would still be an unknown. I feel a bit more confident now that other things (paint, battery, electrical components) on this 2014 Leaf will be the undoing of this glorified golf cart before the splines fail. I'll have to live with the loud clicking for now.

You’re quite welcome. You can torque with your body weight too. Google it :)
