Dear Enel X Way USA, LLC Stakeholder,
After careful consideration, Enel X Way North America has decided to close its electric mobility business in the US and Canada, operated by the local subsidiary of Enel X Way USA, effective October 11, 2024. An experienced third-party firm will be appointed to manage the company’s affairs and ensure that the closure is handled with the utmost care and professionalism. The appointed firm will be responsible for managing the remaining obligations and communicating directly with customers and partners regarding the closure.
This decision is in line with the Enel Group’s strategic approach to e-mobility that pursues further growth by providing bundled offers, including private charging solutions, to its electricity customers as well as by developing public charging infrastructure in countries where it has an electricity retail business. By contrast, Enel North America has no retail electricity customer base and was active in the e-mobility segment only through the sale of charging hardware and software.
Additionally, the dynamics of the EV market in the US have changed quite a lot in the last year and, like many other companies, Enel X Way North America has been impacted by high interest rates which have increased the cost of scaling the charging infrastructure business in a framework of sustained uncertainty where EV sales growth expectations have not been met.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Residential charging hardware (JuiceBox) will maintain the physical operating ability to charge vehicles.
  • All Enel X Way software will be discontinued. Commercial charging stations will lose functionality in the absence of software continuity.
  • The Enel X Way App and all other Enel e-mobility apps in North America will be discontinued and removed from the App Store.
  • Enel X Way customer support is no longer available, effective immediately. Any Enel X Way related questions and claims should be directed to juiceboxnorthamerica.com.
  • The decision to close Enel X Way USA, LLC and related impacts do not apply to Enel X Way customers in other countries outside of the U.S. and Canada.
Enel X Way North America understands that its decision has implications for those who had chosen its charging solutions. Inquiries regarding any outstanding matters, including customer accounts, orders, or obligations, can be directed to juiceboxnorthamerica.com.

North America remains a core geography for the Enel Group, where it will continue to focus investments in utility-scale renewables and demand response.

I just received that message from them. I hope my JuiceBox keeps working. I just tried opening the App and it does not work. I guess, at the least I hope, it will function as a dumb charger (plug in and it charges).

Can some smart person reverse engineer the Juicebox App and continue supporting our community? I would pay for a good App.

I feel especially betrayed because I have stuck with them through 3 Juiceboxes. The first 2 had a failure of the WiFi radio. I also designed a modification of the mounting system and provided it to them for free. (you can use 2 extra screws to mount it to the base if you get 2 more screws that are slightly shorter)

I have two Juicemboxes and they current share.
Without the current share they will blow the breaker.

So what now?

Barry
The settings are stored locally in the charger, they won't be cleared because the App/Servers go down. Just don't change anything before then and they'll continue working as configured.

I've had nothing but problems with Enel X software and as an embedded systems firmware engineer I've noted many poor design choices they made. My reaction to all of this is "good riddance". Their support was top notch for a while; until they got tired of trying to solve my issues and decided to just ignore me.

Let's hope an ambitious embedded systems firmware engineer is reading the thread. My first thought was cracking mine open to see if the parts are compatible with the openEVSE controller.

Are these Juicebox chargers related in any way to the old "open source" chargers from back in the diy days?
e.g.
Juicebox on diy electric car

I don't think so, these EVSE's are home Level 2 units sold by Enel X Way. Costco had them for a while too.

Actually, these EVSEs seem to be the newer generation of those earlier Juicebox devices mentioned in the diyelectriccar.com link from @nlspace .
The OP's post at the diyelectriccar.com site indicates that they worked for Electric Motor Works (eMotorWorks) and provides a link to emotorwerks.com on their signature:
https://craft.co/electric-motor-werks
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMotorWerks

eMotorWorks was acquired by Enel, which continued the Juicebox line.

I am not sure how much they changed the Juicebox internal hardware from the DIY kit they used in the past, but my guess would be that it was significantly reconfigured.

Best of luck to those that use Juicebox EVSEs. 🤞

Woo! Yesterday I was happy to delete this app from my phone, I've tried to charge at public chargers once or twice. One less charging network app!

I'm not familiar with what these different iterations consist of, could anyone describe that? I see at least three versions in picture below, are these all basically the same internals? None of these look like the older (10 years?) original diy juicebox.
I would be interested to get one as an additional EVSE if the communication & control has been opened up, or a new control board. I'm generally nervous that the same thing would happen with my Emporia EVSE that i've integrated with my home & solar controls, but still goes through their cloud.

I have one of the ones in the middle picture with the orange logo that quit working. You can have it for free if you want it. PM me if interested.

I'm curious, but not sure what that is. A link from there to 'free web app for residential customers.' does collect your basic info, name email address phone, but seems to end in this:

In the android app store, there's 'AKRON EV' from Tridens d.o.o. developer, which looks like the Tridens app. Not sure that does anything, it shows stations in Mexico, after creating an account and logging into it. Don't see anything about linking to home chargers.
