Thanks for your help! I guess We'll know in a week or so if it's VIN locked but you're probably right about NA Leaf models.
As for it being a fuse issue, as far as I know I've checked all the fuses (unless there's one I'm not sure of). The head unit seems to power on, sort of. On occasion it'll show a software update screen with no way to update it (unless we take it to the dealership I suppose). But most of the time it's just a blank screen but lights around the volume dial light up. We've also tried the usual checks that I know about: holding the volume button down for a few seconds to reset, unplugging the 12v battery, and I even removed the whole head unit, unplugged everything and plugged it back in.
Regarding losing any extra features, as long as Carplay and potentially the reverse camera work, that's probably all my son is concerned about so I hope he'll at least have those.
