So this 2012 has old maps in it. I assume they dont have free upgrades unlike all the other gps companies out there. What do they run? Does anyone ever get them? I have an offline map program on my phone anyway. In town I use google maps since i have data access but it too supports limited caching.

http://allthingsnav.navigation.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Even http://www.nissanusa.com/connect" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; points to http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/Navteq-NissanNorthAmerica-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewApplication-DisplayCachedWelcomePage?SelectedMenuItem=Home" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Apparently Here is the new name for http://www.navteq.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Re: your statement, which automakers provide free map updates for their nav systems? I can think of VERY few.

Thanks for adding info to your sig, BTW.... so 6K miles is how much that '12 Leaf has on the clock or is that what you put on?

I bought it with 5k and i put on 1k in 2 weeks. (not normal)

I am sure no auto makers provide free nav updates. Garmin etc do.

Wow. Strange... that's very low mileage for a used '12. I'm just a tiny bit shy of 10K miles on my leased '13, which I began leasing end of July 2013.

As for Garmin, well, yes/no. You can buy one time or lifetime map updates (http://www.garmin.com/en-US/maps/updates/?/automotive/purchase" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). And yes, there are some units sold w/lifetime updates included. Not more than a few years ago, that wasn't even a common choice or choice at all.

it was totaled and repaired pretty well AFAIK
Oh! That's right... salvage title. I wouldn't have bought it, esp. not at the price I heard...

If something fails that's incredibly expensive to repair, hope you can sell the battery to someone who's outside the 5 year/60K mile capacity warranty w/insufficient capacity and part out the rest of the bits.

Back on topic the upgrade is not worth it. Buy a holder for your phone for $10 instead. Install Waze if you have too.

+1. The only use for the center console, IMO, is for general car setup/config and to respond to the nag screen. I think a good project would be a dongle to get Chromecast/Miracast/Airplay to drive the center console so you can leave your phone on your hip. For bonus points send the touch coordinates back (blueooth?).

I was wondering why those guys making the battery monio apps don't just make a board that interfaces with the existing screen and switches over with a user installed switch in the glovebox or under the dash. Perhaps it too could play Pandora Mp3 etc it should not take mmuch to play an mp3,

The hardware nor software behind the "MFD" (multi-function display in Prius parlance, which has sorta carried over here) isn't publicly documented in any detail or at all. I doubt the service manual has any info of any use either. I haven't followed http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=8530" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, but Ingineer is a really smart EE but even he decided to make his own device (http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=8251" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), which I think never ended up shipping.

Many folks here are leasing their Leafs and this wouldn't want to modify nor risk damaging an expensive part. Much easier for folks like Turbo3 behind LeafSpy to write software to run on Android phones and let other people worry about the hardware, which are cheap commodities (e.g. many have Android phones and cheapo Android phones that will work can be had; BT dongles are cheap).

And, '13+ Leaf S trims don't even have the nav unit and instead have a totally different stereo.

'13+ SV and SL stereo already supports playing MP3s and Pandora.

Well I will uld much rather use a dedicated device than my phone. I like to make calks and don't want to be fiddling with it.
There are some, like http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=8527" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (more info at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=309590#p309590" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I've met Turbo3 twice before.

I'm guessing he'd rather invest his time on the Android app than the above due to hardware limitations. As he mentions:
The SX28AC is a very basic single chip system with 2K words (12 bits) of EEPROM program storage, 136 bytes of RAM all inside a 28 pin package with 20 general purpose I/O pins. The instruction set is similar to the PIC16C5x series but with a few more instructions. It can run at up to 75 MHz with one instruction executed each cycle (except for jumps/calls, of course).
And, he had to do it all in assembly language.

As for dedicated device, people have located cheap (IIRC, under $50) pre-paid Android phones that will work and don't require any service to work for use w/LeafSpy.

The main issue is time and too many other project higher on the list.

It seems like Pandora is only supported on iPhones.

And the playing of MP3s via a memory card in the USB port is ... pathetic. It's slow to search the flash card, it's slow to select the playback, the UI is terrible, the song sort order is chaotic, it has to start all over again when you turn the car back on (or change to the radio and back).... it's just terrible. The >10 year old PhatNoise in my Passat (upgraded with a 120G hard drive) blows this away. I didn't think I'd miss the voice prompts (no special display), but I do... along with the gapless playback and fastforward capabilities.

I actually plan to pick up a used iPod Classic (120G) to use as a replacement for the build-in MP3 player in my SL. I'm already back to using my Android phone (with Waze) to avoid the stock navigation system.

This should solve all our problems:

I think the built in GPS is pretty nice, actually. Nice big screen, right where I want it. Integrated with the sound system and the software itself is quite good. I'd have no problem dropping $180 on a map update if I thought I was too out of date.

IMHO, it's not great. It's generally a step backwards from that of my 06 Prius.

For starters (there are many other issuse), the '13 nav system has no way of entering in addresses by voice. On my 06 Prius, I could say address than enter in an address by going backwards: state, city, street and house number (there are prompts). I could say things like suspend guidance, delete destination or resume Guidance. I could also say "70 degrees" or "I'm hungry" (would show all restaurants on the map) or "Chinese restaurants" (would show Chinese restaurants on the map), or "POI off" (turn off all point of interest icons). The limited set of commands on the '13 Leaf's nav system are virtually useless.

A new nav DVD for my Prius is ~$200 or a bit less. I'm still on my original DVD, which had to have been completed in 05 or earlier. If I ever go somewhere where I'm not that familiar or it's critical the maps be up to date, I can use either of my two smartphones (not convenient though) or I bring my Garmin PND along which has newer maps.

Seems a bit crazy to charge $180+ for a map update when http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-n%C3%BCMaps-Lifetime-America-Updates/dp/B001PKTFM8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is $71. But, unfortunately, virtually all automakers charge a lot for map updates. :(

Not an Apple fan. And being typically Apple, I'm sure it will have/be missing some features that will drive people crazy but which Apple will have decided it best for us...

I only have two Apple products: An iPad 3 since there weren't any other really good tablet options at the time I bought it (there are now), and an old 60Gb iPod Touch I use in the Leaf due to its pathetic infortainment system and worthless USB integration.
