My wife and I just got home from a pre-owned EV dealer in Portland with our “new” 2019 Leaf SV+. Silver, SV Tech Package, with just under 35k on it. Looking forward to fewer gas stops and oil changes in my life.

This is our first EV. It will generally be our around town car, probably more used by my wife than me. I wanted a plus so it could also handle the occasional day-trip to visit our daughter who’s 70 miles away without needing to charge, and for similar length trips as needed. We have a couple of recurring short-ish road trips (300 miles) that I may tackle with it, depending on how comfortable I am with the concept after some time with it.

Now to get a Level 2 EVSE. Our garage has a 30A circuit (14-30 outlet). I’ve identified a couple of possibilities, but if anyone has a recommendation, I’m listening…

Cheers!

Are there two instances of this post? I posted something really long on the other one. There may be two different people with an identical problem. The consensus was have an electrician add a nema6-20 receptacle then get a stage two charger to fit it on Amazon

I own a '19 SL Plus, which I purchased used through Platt Auto. I charge it with a Clipper Creek EVSE (LCS-30P) which came with a 14-30 pigtail which I plug into a 30A outlet in my garage. The charger does not have the "smart" features or wifi capability of many newer and more expensive EVSE's but this charging arrangement has served me well through 3 EVs.

My trips are 120, to 160 miles each. I go home and use an L2 charger to charge the car. If I make 200-mile trips I'll stop in Olympia at the dealer and use the Chademo charger it to charge to 90%.

It took my daughter and I about two hours to install NEMA 15-40 240vac outlet. It was a piece of cake, we installed the outlet directly below the breaker box. I purchased an inexpensive (Temu or AliExpress) charging cord. That way I can leave the OEM cord in the car. I may need it sometime away from home. Using this second cord eliminates the need to remove the cord from the car and I return it to the car after charging. So fare the 5000 miles on the car haven't cost me a dime at public chargers.

I did the same: I installed a 50A outlet and bought a second EVSE that stays plugged in. My Nissan EVSE stays in the car.

Yes, there are two instances of this post. I made one post, then later when I didn't see it, I didn't realize that it was awaiting moderator approval. I figured I'd done something wrong and posted again, hence the nearly repeated post.

Really sorry for the confusion.

I read your post on the other thread. Thanks for taking the time. I confess I don't understand the purpose of your recommendations, or that of other folks who made similar posts. All I was asking was for recommendations for an EVSE to use that limits charging to 24A and will insert into my 14-30 outlet, which was wired in as a welder circuit on its own 30A breaker when we built the house. The idea of spending money to get a higher amperage circuit installed so I can use the 14-50 plug on my Nissan EVSE and get an extra 2.5A seems a waste to me.

There are a number of them out there. After a few days of research, I ordered one of these: https://ev-chargers.com/nema-14-30/nema-14-30-level-2-ev-charger

Arrived and put in use. Working well.

Thanks again for taking the time to craft a reply.

So you’ve already GOT a 240v outlet. That wasn’t clear. It sounded like you had a 30 amp main in the garage box but no actual outlet other than 110. If you’ve got an outlet all you need is a charger or possibly just possibly an adaptor for the plug. The included granny charger will work if you just get an adaptor from 14-30 to 14-50 as the leaf won’t draw enough to pop the breaker. This may not be true of other evs though. Getting a charger to fit your plug also works and won’t pop your breaker even if you put a higher draw vehicle on it.
