Recreation of the Electric Sociability Run of 1914 (May 27, 2013) in DC

Drivers and fans of plug-in electric vehicles will gather in Washington, DC to celebrate the 99th anniversary of the Electric Sociability Run of 1914. The event will be held on Memorial Day, May 27, 2013 and the tour will conclude with a picnic in Rock Creek Park.

Members of the Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington, DC and MD Volt, Inc. are working on plans to recreate the sociability run by meeting near the Smithsonian Institution and taking a relaxed tour through the city and up Rock Creek Park to Joaquin Miller Cabin, the same destination as the 1914 electric sociability run nearly a century ago. As with the original event, there will be a picnic, various contests and prizes will be awarded.

Mark Twain once said “History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” In an uncanny parallel with the past, a new generation of passionate plug-in car owners is getting together to share their excitement with each other and the broader public, just as the “early adopters” of the early 1900’s did.

Current electric car owners are meeting socially, they are forming clubs, talking about their cars, going to gatherings (now called meetups), and trying to teach the broader public about the advantages of plug-in cars, just as owners 100 years ago did. They are advocates for more public charging, just as before. They are testing their range, mapping out charging stations, marveling at torque, enjoying the quietness, and taking cross-country tours in their electric cars. We are witnessing the rebirth of mass market electric cars. We are entering the beginning of the re-electrification of transportation. The automobile is being brought back to its electric roots.

Established auto makers GM, Ford and Nissan are selling record numbers of plug-in vehicles. New electric car manufacturer, Tesla Motors, is producing thousands of its Model S sedan. The plug-in car rally planned for Memorial Day may be the biggest gathering of electric vehicle owners in Washington, DC since 1914.

14 miles in 1 hour 15 minutes...that's around 11mph! When people say that old electric cars had a range of 100 miles, now I see why! 11mph would make that possible...

its a party. if 50 cars are involved it will take over 20 minutes for the line to start moving and about the same time to stop, so the actual "drive" time will be much less. its no race either way and the objective is "efficient transportation in the subjective sense only"
