I just noticed that the FEZ Panda II board also has a CAN bus and it is a bit cheaper than the mbed.
Its a .net device, so can be programmed quite simply with free software (Visual C# 2010 express, which can be installed locally), e.g.

It also has a SD card slot on board. There also is a touchscreen display for it.
