Forget rolling resistance?

Very true...I was distracted writing that post. Of course weight makes a difference in that it will increase rolling resistance. My main thinking was accelerating the weight, not so much the effect the weight is going to have on the contact patch on the tires, which is also important.

In the end, t doesn't really change what I was trying to get at: that the higher recommended tire pressure on the Model 3 has a significant benefit to the highway efficiency of the car, in addition to the aerodynamics. Basically filling the tires to 45psi versus the LEAF's 35psi (or whatever, notwithstanding those of you that inflate to 44psi anyway) compensates for the additional weight of the battery (I guess we would work out exactly how much, but I've got too much going on right now!)

209 watt hours per mile (4.8 miles/kWh) at 68mph for a relatively flat course is very good.

Even on a perfect hot humid day with neutral wind, my Leaf with aero rims would do no more than 4.4 miles/kWh or 227 watt hours per mile at 68 mph.

Yes, I am totally amazed out how slippery this car is on the highway.

Tesla Mode 3 drag coefficient (CoD) is 0.23, the Nissan Leaf (both generations) drag coefficient is 0.28. You can't deny physics. It may not mean much below 50 MPH, but once you starting getting that exponential increase in drag at higher speeds, Tesla is going to win the efficiency game every time. ;) <Snip>

One point to note re Cd's quoted by manufacturers is that they can vary depending on the wind tunnel used, so you need to be wary of comparing one car to another unless they're tested in the same tunnel. Speaking of which, in a 2014 C&D:

Drag Queens: Aerodynamics Compared

Five slippery cars enter a wind tunnel; one slinks out a winner.

For those of you who have Teslas, what did it cost you to wrap them?

Has anyone done their M3?

How long does the wrap last?

I wrapped mine. Not sure how long it will last, but they say about 5 years, but depends on how much time in direct sunlight. I have a gloss wrap which is supposed to last a bit longer in the sun. I guess I will let you know in 5 years how it lasts. haha. Wrap is significantly less than paint, and now I got to pick a color that makes the car unique. People now recognize me around town. I cant hide and deny where I've been any longer as people say they saw my car there. I've always had easily identifiable cars, and the Tesla Model 3 was hidden in a sea of black cars, but now it stands out. Hopefully the wrap protects the paint. This was the main reason for getting it done.

Last I heard, for the cybertruck a wrap was the only way to get color. That's why I was wondering.

I've been thinking in the desert it would be required, if you didn't want to burn yourself when you touch the vehicle.

Even with Model 3 the door handles are significantly cooler with the wrap. Even if you don't wrap the car, I'd wrap the door handles.

I saw some videos in the UK suggesting that the new LFP SR+ has a 60 kWh battery. That would be a nice boost for the car and its range. Also, the ability to keep the car (any ev for that matter) at 100% nightly is a huge deal/positive.

No matter the chemistry, it's generally better to NOT keep the battery sitting at a full charge. I'm experimenting with some LFP cells for stationary storage, and they seem to self-discharge heavily at anything above nominal voltages.

I used to charge my 2012 SL to 80%, a handy option that was provided on that model. Then, as the battery capacity nosedived quickly, I just used the car less. Today, I charge to 100% every time just to get the measly 35 miles it gives me from that level of charge. Saving the battery is no longer my primary concern, and apparently it didn’t work well with this battery anyway. The car is still OK for errands, but not much more.

On those days when I do charge, I also connect the 12v battery to a tender just to top it off. Don’t know if that’s necessary or not, but seems to be of bit of insurance.

Certainly for a low-range EV like the first-gen LEAF, that makes sense.

For a car with a range of 250 miles, not so much. So I think the question of "Why?" is definitely valid in the context of the vehicle we are talking about.

When I was charging (for free) at work, I used to charge to 90%. Since I started charging at home after retiring earlier this year, I've keep both of our Tesla cars at 70-80%, over 200 miles for each car. That's more than enough for all our normal non-trip driving for a few days. I don't see any benefit to keeping it at 100%.

I do exactly the same. 70% SoC in the summer, 80% in the winter. For trips I top off to 97% or so before we take off. The phone app makes this easy-peasy

From April 7, 2022:
https://insideevs.com/news/578545/us-tesla-model3-prices-april7-2022/
Tesla has increased the prices of the Tesla Model 3 in the US, just about three weeks since the previous general increase, which applied to all models.

This time, the price bump concerns the two NCM-powered versions of the Model 3, while the LFP-powered version maintained its price.
...
Price changes (without DST):
Tesla Model 3:

RWD: no change ($46,990)
Long Range AWD: up $1,500 (or 2.8%) from $54,490 to $55,990
Performance: up $1,000 (or 1.6%) from $61,990 to $62,990

When you have a unique and a highly desirable brand with an inelastic demand, e.g. Tesla, a price increase typically results
in a net positive change in revenues. Unfortunately, few if any EV manufactures are in such a fortuitous environment as is Tesla.

Some of those ideas are really searching for dumb customers. Like the food tray that goes into the driver's area. If you needed to work at a supercharger, sit in the passenger seat! You'll have the whole dash to use. As for the yoke refit ... why exactly would Elon hate that idea? But anyway, leave it to the chinese to be able to develop these accessories so quickly. I already 3-printed a tissue box holder for behind the display screen, but mine is nowhere near as sturdy as theirs.

Food trays that attached to the steering wheel have apparently been selling for ages. Some of them have pretty funny Amazon reviews. It might take me awhile to find the ones I had in mind.

I found a piece with these:

Have been doing the tray thing for quite a while. Back during my road warrior days, it greatly increased my eating choices. It also allowed me to get some work done at the same time. I was able to setup my laptop in the passenger seat well enough to get several processes done. Most of it was uploading or downloading so it was frequently a few clicks then waiting a minute or two.
