I'm with you. I've heard so much about how the aerodynamic shape of the Leaf is critical to it's range - surely grafting a large box onto the back can not be performance neutral. On the other hand, an electric minivan is a good concept and a likely future project. Now lets streamline it and add a bit of battery capacity.

Yes, it makes a difference - but people would consider 80 miles EPA basically same as 84 - even though it is 5% less (which is significant for someone looking at aerodynamics).

The size of the battery is what has the biggest impact on range (something BMW forgot !).

With a 36 or 48 kW pack and a more powerful motor, maybe dual motors and all whel drive, I would be really happy.

Does any one know how the trial is going? When will they make a decision whether it will come to U.S. or not?

Nissan said it will be available in the U.S. when the larger capacity battery pack(s) are available.

Let me help you with that:

The lightness of the car has the biggest impact on performance (something BMW remembered !)
;)

Is that why the Model S outperforms the i3 in every way?

But which did not seem to help their range one iota... Which makes one wonder what they did so wrong...

I think aerodynamics matters way more than vehicle weight, and the i3 is closer to the "broadside of a barn" end of the scale than I'd prefer...
