Auto mark-read

Mon Sep 06, 2010 1:35 pm

On every other phpBB forum I visit and run (as well as just about all other forum software out there), when your session closes, it automatically marks all the threads read. Why doesn't this happen on this board? It's so annoying to come back and see "old" topics I have no interest in reading still unread. I don't want to have to remember to click the "mark all as read" button.

What do you mean by "when your session closes" ?

I never log out, and often do not exit IE8, and only reboot only once every few days (PC goes into very low power sleep mode in between).

Every time I sit back down at the PC I click on "View new posts" and all old ones are NOT marked, so I Ctrl-Click on each and every new one (opens in a new tab).

What browser are you using ? Do you have cookies enabled ? Any software blocking cookies or trackers ?

Works fine for me.

Currently there is a bug left over from the system upgrade and
restoring the missing posts to the database.

On short topics, I rarely have any problem, but on some longer
topics (many posts) it is still going to the wrong spot when
I click the "go to first unread post" link icon.

After you mentioned it ... this is actually the first time I noticed the "go to first unread post" button. What I usually do is "View new posts". On the resulting page I use Ctrl-LeftClick, but not on the topic title (unless it's only one page long), instead I click on the small highest numbered page button. That opens that "new posts" thread to the top of the last page. Then I page or scroll down until I see an amber colored page icon just to the left of the "Posted: <date>" line.

Instead ( after Ctrl-LeftClick ) I can now avoid scrolling and use the "go to first unread post" button :)

I've never had a need to use the "View new posts" anywhere. This is the first board I've had to use it on.

"Normally" (whatever that may be), I visit a board, I see the orange icon indicating there is a new post in that thread, I click (usually center click to open in a new tab) the little orange icon with the arrow next to the title, which takes me to the first new post in that thread and I read the unread messages. I do this for the threads I want to read. I never read ALL the threads so when I'm "done" there are still orange icons.

When you close the browser, your "session" ends (or it could be timed, its all cookies based). At that point, if I reopen the browser and visit the site again, all the posts that were unread are now read, and only the threads that were posted to after my last visit are marked unread.

I use the "keep me logged in" option on all the boards i visit. It doesn't seem to make a difference.

Here, the "go to first unread" links update with each refresh of the page.

That's a nice "feature". Maybe I don't have enough experience with boards ... have not run across one that does it that way. So ... with the two of us coming from different experiences/directions ... seems both ways have something useful.

Frankly - that is one thing I very much enjoy.

I very rarely have time to read all the threads I might be interested in in one sitting. If I lost my place after every browsing session, I'd waste a lot more time reading posts I've already read and trying to figure out what threads I've read already or not.

I use just "View Active Topics" (at the top left), and then look for the "go to first unread" icon-links to identify any topics with new posts.

That way, I can easily read (or skim) all the new posts.

One can easily skip topics if not interested.
