Oh, well. I just booted another Pakistani spammer. Business as usual...

Ask prospective members to tell, in at least 10 words, why they want to join. Then have a Mod approve those who do so. It will eliminate the spammers who create gibberish user names and who don't want to spend more than 1 minute here spamming, which is most of them.

Also, ban Pakistan IPs. I have yet to see a legitimate member from Pakistan. I see numerous spammers every night from there.
I've banned Pakistan IPs - found a list online of 5+ million IP addresses, hopefully that stops them and also doesn't cause too much server load.

As for having mods approve users, I guess it comes down to what's easier to do - there's 30+ signups each day that would have to be sifted through. We tried it on the i3 forum (minus your idea about the 10 word explanation) and it's impossible to tell who is legit and who isn't just by there email and username - I'm getting people that signed up a month ago asking why it's taking so long to be approved!

Maybe prevent new users from making new threads/ports with an embedded URL for their first 10 posts?

(and btw, the current mods *do* a great job on stomping out the spammers)

Does the forum software allow for preventing posting URLs for accounts under a certain age? If it was made so you couldn't post links until your account was, say, 30 days old, that might help.

Thanks Leftie, Randy, and EvDriver for everything you do!

I suspect that of the 30+ signups a day, most are spammers. I'd rather have to approve new members for 10 minutes a day than spend 20+ minutes cleaning up after spammers. The little essay for membership would be necessary for that to be at all effective, though. Failing that, how about requiring Mod approval for the first 5 posts from anyone? I can usually identify copy & paste posts using Google.

Auto-delete any topic containing the word "Keto".

If the site had that capability they'd just use "Keeto" or "Ketoe" or...you get the idea. Probably the most workable solution is having mods approve the first X number of posts.

For Mike and anyone else involved in the IT end of this site: I just got this when trying to ban a spammer's IP:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7812925 bytes) in /home/mike/sites/mynissanleaf.com/phpbb/template/twig/environment.php on line 254

Were you doing that via the admin or moderator control panel? I just tested now (without thinking) via the admin control panel and it banned the IP without errors.

I was doing it as a Mod. I guess it just ran out of room, somewhere, and either cleared what needed clearing itself, or someone else did it.

There was in fact much less spam last night.
