I agree, which is why I'm hoping the 14-16 cu ft specs are a mistake.
The reported dimensions of the Ariya are also much larger than Bolt:
About 5 inches wider
About 19 (!) inches longer

That does not tell has how Nissan apportioned the car but they had a LOT more space to play with and it suggests that though the rear seats may have to be folded, there is a lot more space behind the front seats compared to the Bolt

Where are we getting this 16 cu feet data? I am not seeing it anywhere and only an idio...oh wait...it is Nissan. Ok, well only grossly deluded would go smaller.

This is why I categorize this as an unverified rumor. Nissan has not released the level of specs that would dive into this sort of detail.

But at least one outlet said that this was the interior capacity. I'd take it with a grain of salt until Nissan is closer to actually offering the Ariya for sale.

This is not an unverified rumor. The Nissan Ariya global press release lists the luggage capacity and other specs at the very bottom of this page: https://global.nissannews.com/en/releas ... 7dfa00076e

466 L = 16.46 cu ft

If this is the case it's honestly embarrassingly small especially given the competition and even the LEAF!

I'm seriously hoping it's a typo but I'm prepared to be disappointed.

The measurement system/standard is murky to me.

For example, I found https://europe.nissannews.com/en-GB/rel ... xt-chapter from Feb 2013 says
"By moving the charger from the rear of the LEAF to under the bonnet, it has been possible to increase the luggage area by as much as 40 litres... or to put that another way, about the size of a typical airplane ‘carry-on' suitcase. Trunk capacity has increased to 370 litres." That's ~13 cu ft.

Yet, https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do ... s&id=33558 under Specs lists the '13 Leaf as having 24 cu feet of luggage volume.

So, given the press release that jdcbomb pointed to, we might be comparing apples vs. oranges, for now.

This Early Nissan release comes with this caveat because the feature set and localization was not finalized. Best to wait for the production launch specifications.

“NOTE: The above specifications are as of July 2020 and are subject to homologation. Model names, features and specifications may vary by market.”

Looking at press photos, it would appear the hatch area is maybe 6 to 8" shorter than the LEAF and has hidden underfloor storage that was not pictured so can only guess what that would be. Fold down storage is flat however so that would be a big jump. Since my Son is now in the front seat, having that available would be common for me but for families with car seats? I think Nissan missed the boat here.

I stopped relying on Nissan specs when the 2013 came out with the EXACT same 23.6 cu feet dimension as the 2011-12's

Was not the 2011-2017 Leafs all build in the same size body shell?

That doesn't mean the interior wasn't rearranged. The 2011-12 had the charger in the hatch that created a "wall" of sorts that went across the entire back of the hatch just behind the back seats. Later the charger was moved to the front which created a gap with only a small bump on both sides of the hatch remaining. the bumps were maybe 8" or so. Later those bumps were removed. All those changes increased the size of the cargo area but official Nissan measurements never changed.
