'21 and '22 Leaf Plus lease deals/situation?

Sun Sep 26, 2021 12:09 am

I don't see anything at https://electrek.co/best-electric-vehic ... es/#Nissan that is outstanding and that appears to be in stock at the dealer's web site.

Example is a '21 Leaf Plus deal allegedly at Team Nissan NH. They (https://www.teamnissannh.com/new-vehicl ... =our_price) don't even have any Leafs in stock per their site right now, only a '22 SL Plus in transit. There's allegedly a deal at Nissan Mission Hills in So Cal on a '22 Leaf SV Plus but at https://www.nissanofmissionhills.com/in ... _price-asc, there aren't any of those.

The other night, I checked https://www.nissanusa.com/shopping-tool ... issan-leaf and the inventory appeared to be pretty light for the Bay Area and beyond. Many cars were in transit and if you checked dealer web sites, they didn't seem to actually have the cars.

I just checked 10 dealers (2 I'd rather not do business with, 2 over 100 miles away) and their sites list having 0 new Leafs in stock. Another has only 2 Pluses (a '21 and '22, both SL Pluses and that more than I'd want to spend). Another dealer which might be questionable supposedly has 4 '22 non-Plus and no Pluses.

https://www.nissanusa.com/shopping-tool ... ffers.html doesn't list any lease deals. Don't think the chip shortage, Smyrna plant shutdown and Nissan having stopped producing Leafs for awhile at Smyrna before the shutdown helped things...

Considering leasing a Leaf Plus as a temp car if I get a good buyback offer from GM on my recently recalled '19 Bolt.

I called a couple Bay Area (+ a bit outside it) Nissan dealers today about stock of new Leafs. Situation isn't great.

Examples:
- Boardwalk in Redwood City says they have 3 (all Pluses) in stock, matching their web site.
- Gilroy: Nada. They didn't expect to get any more for rest of the year.
- San Leandro: Claimed their site only has 8 to 12 hour lag when a Leaf shows up. They have 1 in stock.
- Cardinale in Seaside - No '22s. Don't know when they're getting more.
- Dublin - Their web site showed some '22 and '21 (I think 5 and 4). They said they're all in transit and they have none now.
- Salinas - zip. They had 1 in stock (I think a non-Plus) but it's gone.

You haven't driven the Gen II Leaf much, IIRC. They are nice cars. Lots of power, and if you keep your foot down, the Plus has even more. Good handling - better if you replace the tires with good ones. And the Leaf II is the most comfortable car I've driven - possibly excepting that damned protrusion into the foot well...anyway, I suggest you drive one again.

My seat time in gen 2 was limited to a non-Plus for about 45 minutes before they went on sale in the US. A rep (contractor hired by Nissan) brought the car to a meeting place of my choice. I chose (at the time) free L2 public charging.

When I was in the market for Bolt and bought it at end of Jan 2019 (when Federal tax credit was still $7500 for GM), Leaf Plus I knew was coming but only with a vague "Spring 2019". I figured Nissan would wait until tax credit on GM EVs/PHEVs would fall from $7500 to $3750 before making the Leaf Plus available for sale, but they jumped the gun by a bit.

Back then, obviously Leaf Plus was brand new and wasn't likely to be heavily discounted at the beginning (vs. heavily discounted Bolts) and the 40 kWh batteries hadn't been out long, let alone us having no track record on the new 62 kWh pack. And, 40 kWh rapidgate was already well-known.

It really sucks the whole used and new car supply situation is so goofy along w/absurd pricing on used Leafs.

And, as I posted at viewtopic.php?p=611394#p611394, I received an email from my work on Friday banning Bolts from work. :( It's not like I have another car. A bit more about my situation is at https://www.chevybolt.org/threads/bolt- ... ost-659798 along w/my replies over there.

I'm not complaining about the prices of used EVs at all. Vroom is buying my Tesla Model 3 for what it cost me 3.5 year ago.

The irony here is that cwerdna and I just fell on opposite sides of luck. I tried to sell my LEAF and failed, which has worked out great for me since it lets me wait out the 6 months for a replacement Tesla and enjoy the used car market. He tried and failed to sell his LEAF for at least a year, and then dumped it just in time to be stricken by the Bolt and to not enjoy the used car market.
