Wife was searching for charging stations and came across this:

https://durhamnc.gov/264/Electric-Vehicles-Charging-Stations

Most of the charging stations listed have the note "Not compatible with 2018 or 2019 Leafs".

I navigated to several of the listed stations (using Plugshare with zipcode 27701) and they appear to be J1772. Some of them simply have a note something like "doesn't work with 2018 Leaf". One of them (https://www.plugshare.com/location/12086) goes further: "Currently there are signs posted asking users to not charge 2018 Nissan Leafs as it causes the stations to malfunction."

We called the local Nissan dealer (Michael Jordan Nissan) who appear to be idiots and know nothing about this and don't seem to care.

Anyone have any idea what is going on here ?

Thanks. I guess my search kungfu was not strong enough, although I was only looking in this subforum instead of the "Troubleshooting" one. I guess I'll not delete this thread, as it points people towards the helpful one you linked.

I just went straight to Google as I didn't know where I might find the info. You can add a site:mynissanleaf.com to a google search, if you want to limit a search to here, which often works better than the forum's search function.

Summary of that long thread Dave sent me to:

There's an incompatibility issue with Eaton EVSEs and 2018 and newer Leafs. Incompatibility was apparently due to software changes Nissan made in 2018 in anticipation of new protocols among EVSE manufacturers and since Eaton EVSEs are no longer getting software upgrades, it's a problem. The main problem seems to be that the Eaton EVSEs are no longer receiving software updates because the manufacturer is no longer in the EVSE business. Basically, the car and the EVSE aren't communicating well sometimes because software needs to be updated in the EVSE.

Yeah, I read that, but I don't buy it. There are TONS of EVSEs out there that have no net connections and will never receive any sort of updates, yet they haven't stopped working with LEAF. Nor am I actually aware of any "new protocols" for J1772. Since there's no actual data link in J1772, the incompatibility if most likely a timing thing. I think that Nissan just changed their J1772 timing enough to break EATON EVSEs again, and this time there won't be anyone who cares enough to fix it.

But the bottom line is the same, we're SOL as far as using these chargers. Unless Nissan themselves can possibly fix it at the Leaf end, which they don't appear to be interested in doing.

Anyhow, not too worried myself. We do almost all charging at home, and on the rare occasion we are gonna need to charge away from home, hopefully it'll be a planned event, and we will have located a Chademo station.
