Phil's suggestion for including two relays for safety is very good. A link to specific, cost-effective relays would be helpful.
Making your own "240-device" can save a few $, but takes some significant amout of time and effort to do it properly.
Some might unwisely decide to just wire a "Y", with two wires (Hot and Ground) to one 5-15 plug and one wire (Hot) to the 2nd 5-15 plug. But, you are cautioned that using it can be almost as dangerous as plugging a metal object into any socket.
