Precisely, the moment they make a real public announcement it'll be everywhere so if all they can say is "We are researching the lost capacity bars to determine their cause and what kind of resolution might be needed" everyone will know about it, where as now they still have time to figure it out and then formulate their response.

2. Leafkabob reported a street encounter with a Leaf owner who stated he lost a bar after about a year.

I could be mistaken, but I'm feeling that Nissan is waiting on a battery that can withstand high temps and possibly cold temps without any TMS or battery warmers. I feel that these are only one to two years away, and then they will replace all the ones with one, two, or more bar losses with these under warranty and everyone will be happy.

A possible solution would be to equip a Leaf with the A123 pouch cells with their new high-temp nano-phosphate chemistry.

They aren't quite as dense, but apparently will not suffer the same degradation.

the Toshiba SCiB cells are also supposed to be high temperature tolerant.

Might I suggest that azdre update the original post to include the list that leafkabob outlined.

Azdre, if you are up for that, it would help to keep the info at the forefront of the thread.

Or you can update the list in the wiki. That way everybody can help maintain it.

wxxyz was good enough to put the wiki up. Use it. Save the forum for "how to disable the 'nag screen'" threads :D .

Which is an interesting thought since while they may not hold as much energy when new, it's quite possible that in many climates they will hold more energy after 5-10 years of use...

All else equal - I'd rather have the battery that retains more capacity after 5 years than the one that retains more capacity for the first year or two.

It'd be really nice to have actual data to compare!
