What does a sitting leaf do?

So as part of my move to another part of the country, my employer is shipping my cars. One of them being my days old leaf.

So what does a leaf do when it's left to sit for approximately a week? I'll post updates here.

It started with an 83% charge, showing 76 miles of range with climate control off, and 60 with climate control on. The dealer was confident that proper procedure was to charge the car to 80% for storage.

5 hours 0 minutes to trickle charge, 1 hour 30 minutes to L2 charge. (Sorry, I didn't grab a screen grab.)

The car is now on day 3 of it's journey, still sitting at the depot in Gardena.

As far as I know, it's only been driven onto a flatbed tow truck, and then driven off to sit in a lot waiting for the autotransporter.

Day 2 yields the following:

Wow, interesting....so after the 1st two days, the battery went down by 5% charge and held steady...so far?

Does carwings report odometer? Did your transport guy go for a joyride?

Every 5 days, if nedessary, the LEAF will recharge the 12v battery (from the traction battery), and a small variation in estimated SOC can "drop" a bar, making it look like more charge has been lost than actually has been used.

Also, there must be a fair amount of electronics still "ON" in the car to measure cell voltages, calculate SOC, use the CAN buss, and talk/listen to CARWINGS.

Where is the RFID, inside an unlocked car, or ... ? Maybe that and the security system take extra power?

Did you record the mileage when you "gave" the car to them?

This is one example of where the Watt-Hours-Used meter would accurately tell the "real" story.

But, since things are stable now, it is looking good. :)

I left my LEAF for almost 3 weeks at home, with the battery charged at about 60%. I lost about 3-4 miles during this period. The LEAF was not plugged in.

So which state are you moving to ? Is that to a non-launch state ...

I did indeed forfeit my $5,000 CA rebate, so I trust that one of you deserving leaf purchasers will apply for it and promptly cash that check.

If I told you which state I was moving to, that would probably end the fun debate on the commute thread about where I could drive 3 miles to, then 7 miles inside property. :)

It is indeed a non-launch state, so I will be the first leaf the local DMV has faced off with. And it will not endear me to my fellow leaf waiting list holders who have been pushed back.

Yeah for early adopting gone awry. I'll keep everyone posted.

Siberia ?

See ... you should have been careful at the gate this morning, like I told you !

I'm interested in the state mainly to see if you will be facing really cold climate - and what Leaf's range will be.

As has been discussed on another thread, this is normal and expected. CarWings is stating the charge in percent, but it is really just reporting how many bars you would see if you turned the power on in the car. 83% = 10 bars; 75% = 9 bars. So you started out at "just barely" 10 bars. Now you are at "not quite" 10 bars.

I'm surprised Nissan has not asked for you to give back your LEAF. No infrastucture in the non-launch states, or so they say. Can't have any LEAFs there....

Well, day 4, and the car still reports it is sitting in Gardena waiting for the transport truck to pick it up.

To answer other questions on this thread: I will not normally be testing it's cold climate behaviour, but I will have to deal with some heat extremes. Yesterday was cool and humid, so in my ICE car I found myself running the Air Conditioner (to dehumidify) and the heat (to stay warm). This is a frequent problem here, as failure to run the AC will cause the humidity inside the car to skyrocket to a point where you can't see out the windows. I wonder what the range cost will be on those days.

Tomorrow it will be below freezing, so if the car ever gets on a truck destined for here, we'll start to see some climate testing.

Todays carwings reports the following:

My previous post in this thread was a bit sarcastic. More to the point: will this (and likely future moving LEAF owners) support or will it refute Nissan's implied claim that the geographic rollout must go strictly according to their plan. So far as I can tell, no one (except maybe Nissan) knows exactly why they've been so strict about their geographic rollout plans. Perhaps this type of migration will give us additional insight.

Maybe this sub-topic needs tp be split to a separate thread...

Speculation is the local dealers crib (because they'd losing sales to out of state dealers).

Well, we're at Day 5, and the moving company still reports the leaf as sitting in their depot in Gardena, California. I'm really disappointed as well, since today it was 5c outside, and 17c in my garage as I left. My hope was to see how the battery behaved when pre-conditioned in the garage, and then driven in some cold.

I've located all 16 of the 110v outlets in our parking garage so I can plan to do some L1 charging while at work if necessary.

In the meantime, we see no change in the leafs report out for the last 24 hours:

Once you own it I don't think Nissan can do much about it, whether they like it or not. It's now yours to do with as you see fit.

float charge. SOC is always a bit overestimated right after being taken off the charger. i would guess the rate of decline will be minimal for that short a period.
