And automakers also need to be pragmatic with regards to the infrastructure in the market they're trying to sell in.

Japanese market VW e-Golf and BMW i3 have CHAdeMO inlets. http://www.chademo.com/ says there are 7600 CHAdeMO chargers in Japan. I'd guess that # of CCS either Combo1 or Combo2 for public use in Japan is near 0, if not 0.
 
Agreed, it seems like Japan is almost anti css.
I didn't realize they had effectively 0 css in the whole country.

The correct abbreviation is CCS (Combined Charging System), not CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

One of them is dead but there's a copy at https://web.archive.org/web/20131115092648/http://news.bmw.co.jp/press/2013/11/13a.html. You can run it thru Google Translate but in both cases, you can just search them for CHAdeMO.

I saw the VW e-Golf w/CHAdeMO at Tokyo Motor Show myself (posted about it at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=509827#p509827 and the linked post). You can see the mention of CHAdeMO almost halfway down https://web.archive.org/web/20180806113721/https://www.volkswagen.co.jp/ja/models/egolf.html#item=3&gallery=150777597431680447.

Why would they have any CCS in Japan? It wouldn't make any sense. CHAdeMO chargers and vehicles were deployed well before the CCS standard was even finished. '11 Leaf shipped in Dec 2010 and could have CHAdeMO. By Oct 2012 (https://web.archive.org/web/20121014023022/http://www.chademo.com/), there were 1344 CHAdeMO chargers in Japan. Japan's land area is about 89% that of California and as I mentioned earlier, has 7600 CHAdeMO chargers.

I don't know the full history of CHAdeMO, but https://www2.toyota.co.jp/en/news/10/03/0315_1.html is from March 2010. https://www.chademo.com/about-us/history-and-timeline/ has some info.

The first vehicle to ship in the US supporting CCS was the Chevy Spark EV, a CA compliance car that only sold in CA and eventually (IIRC), a tiny # in Oregon. It didn't even have CCS available early on. It came months later. The next one in the US that could have CCS was the BMW i3.

CHAdeMO also has support for V2H that AFAIK, CCS still doesn't have, at least not on vehicles sold in the US. I pointed to the supposed # of V2H systems in Japan at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=506926#p506926.
 
Point was that India may slant towards Chademo and some of the cars are reflecting it. 50/50 if ccs remains.

All that said, any work on a Chademo to CCS (or vice versa adaptor)? I saw rumor of one, but nothing more.

Not just a passive connection of wires. Would require an active circuit that would need to be battery powered. A microprocessor that would pretend to be a Chademo charger to the car and a CCS car to the charger, or vice versa. I'm not even sure if it technically possible.

Tesla cars outside North America are mostly Type 2. Effectively CCS/2, but using only the AC part of the connector (for most models). The Tesla supercharger network in Australia is OK, but not brilliant considering our low population density (we have large distances between cities). So a popular (but expensive, AU$500 or US$350) item is a CHAdeMO to Tesla adapter. This is effectively a CHAdeMO to CCS/2 adapter. So it's technically possible. Tesla tends to give these to owners that refer a friend who goes on to buy a Tesla.

This is slightly different. Tesla is setting up the car to pretend to be CHAdeMO, so no bridge microprocessor is needed.

This adapter wouldn't work on any car, only on a Tesla, or a car that copied Tesla's multi-protocol interface. A car that can't pretend to be CHAdeMO couldn't use an adapter like this.
