Re: I Beat EPA's 2.9 Miles/KWh : Report Your Monthly Mileage

June mileage:

Wall-to-wheels: 4.48 miles/kWh

Dash: 4.9 miles/kWh

Charging efficiency at 240 V, 16 A: ~91% (This high figure may be due to only one 100% charge; 90% or less is adequate for this time of the year for long trips and 50% to 60% when shorter trips are planned. I find it fairly simple to charge in half hour blocks depending on how many fuel bars I think I will need over the next day or two; I just adjust one of my timers as needed.)

My miles/kWh was lower than in May (5.1 miles/kWh) but June driving included more vertical/mile and fewer more efficient longer trips. June had two trips over Red Mountain Pass, 11,018 feet and had some AC use, which was not the case in May. Also, May was exceptional because of two 100+ mile trips on single charges that involved significant hypermiling.

Notes: No preheating used, so charging efficiency can be calculated, although the dash mileage numbers are too coarse for precision. Driving temperatures were mostly 70s and 80s. Battery temps of six bars most of the time and nothing but six bars the last two weeks; June is usually the sunniest, hottest month here. Elevation range: 11,000 feet to 5750 feet. All driving includes steep hills. No multi-lane highway driving at all. Some of the driving is on dirt roads.

I see on carwings that the "world champion" of miles KWH in the Leaf is averaging 56.6 miles KWH! How is this possible? Maybe he lives on top of a big hill, has the car towed to the top every day, and coasts down to the bottom? :? :? :? :? :?

Find a long gentle descent. Power cycle the car, accept carwings disclaimer. Drive to bottom. Power cycle car, decline carwings disclaimer, return to top of hill, power cycle car....

56.6 miles/kWh * 21 kWh usable = range 1188.6 miles!

AHA! Seems like a lot of effort, just to be the champion. That guy's gotta get a life, me thinks.

July mileage:

Wall-to-wheels: 4.41 miles/kWh

Dash: 5.0 miles/kWh

Charging efficiency at 240 V, 16 A: ~88% (This high figure may be due to no 100% charges; 90% or less is adequate for this time of the year for long trips and 50% to 60% when shorter trips are planned. I find it fairly simple to charge in half hour blocks depending on how many fuel bars I think I will need over the next day or two; I just adjust one of my timers as needed.)

Notes: No preheating used, so charging efficiency can be calculated, although the dash mileage numbers are too coarse for precision. Driving temperatures were mostly 70s and 80s with some 60s. Battery temps of five bars most of the time with six bars on warmer days or right after charging; July is usually cooler than June here, once the "monsoon season" begins and it came right on schedule. Elevation range: 8,000 feet to 5750 feet. All driving includes steep hills. No multi-lane highway driving at all. Some of the driving is on dirt roads.

i dont think i posted July figures. now, i can only say i got 5.1 from the Car. i used a LOT of public charging (Quick Charge gone wild! ;) ) in July so i tossed my "wall" numbers since not all of them provide data on charge received.

but the real reason i wanted to post this is a large # of things

gas prices dropped from $4.18 to $3.20 then bumped to $3.39

before posting July, my 3 month average Apr-Jun driving

Prius 1314 miles @ $112 LEAF 1140 miles @ $24 total average; 2454 @ $136

for July; Prius 818 miles @ $61 LEAF; 1587 miles @ $28. total 2400 @ $89

so basically saved about $50 (real savings was $39.60) from excessive use of free charging.

if it had been May when gas was $4.18 then savings would have been about $60.

savings from driving a LEAF over a Prius; $80
savings from driving a LEAF over a 30 mpg car; $151.31
