Re: Bought an HD Dash Cam for my LEAF - Check it out here...

It's very strange that Nissan wasted this space. I actually bought a spare center console cover, etc., so I can try building a new version (planning on adding Qi chargng, and various other options).

I also bought a 808 #16 camera a while back, which offers an extended lens option, with the purpose of recording the right and left side of the vehicle, but I haven't found a good mounting spot yet, and those small A-pillar windows are not a good location. I didn't want to use the C pillar windows as it's too far back, but maybe I need to give it a try.

One of the things to keep in mind is that the camera has to be close to the glass, or you will run into exposure issues, but at the same time, you don't want to block the side airbags.

If it weren't for the exposure issue, I'd create a new enclosure to replace the ceiling dome light, with an 808 pointing each way.

All the other cars I've had in the past had an Ash Tray in this location, perhaps that's what this void is for or for pop-out cup holders.

Not sure, but I have a 3D Printer and I might be putting it to use this weekend.

As per the side cameras, My plan is to put them as close to the glass as possible.

I'll post a Video with them mounted on the sides.

I may Also add another set of Cams to the Front of the LEAF looking directly left and directly right so that when approaching an Intersection you can see on coming traffic from the left and the right.

This picture shows two examples where I might mount the cameras, Either inside the fog light indentations or mounted below and behind the License plate.

What do you think?

I finally installed my 2nd pair of dashcams and I can see 360 Degrees around my LEAF :)

Here's some pics on how I attached the Cameras to my rear doors:

Can you please post some pictures of how you mounted those sideways cameras, and maybe a full resolution video frame? I've been thinking about installing bullet cams designed for motorcycles, but this looks great.

I bought a MINI 0801 dashcam and installed it incognito behind the LEAF's rearview mirror. Works great but I was dismayed that the dashcam only came with Windows player software (I'm primarily a Mac user). I'm a software developer so I took it upon myself to write Mac-compatible player software for it. That was a year and a half ago. Now the software now supports about 25 different models and there's a Windows version as well. If you want to give it a try check out Dashcam Viewer http://dashcamviewer.com. Here is a getting-started tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwCAjRwk_Ik.

You must not have looked around, as Datakam has been around for at least a year. That said, I do like the look of your software, and the more competition, the better. I'll have to check it out.

Are you still using the original cable? Was it long enough for both sides? Do you have the lens touching the glass (and if so, are you worried about vibrations/door slamming causing damage)?

Very cool & unique install, great job. It's too bad the wire can't be tucked inside the trim, since that works in most other spots.

For what it's worth, 3M sells some really good automotive-grade tape, but with all the door movement, the screws will probably make one feel more at ease.

I got extra rear camera, so the sides are two rears with 20 foot cables. the front was too short.

The Cameras are not touching the glass. They are pointing down a bit.

If they were touching the glass the cameras would be looking at the sky.
