Rubber chin spoiler aero? cool looking?

Wed Apr 24, 2019 5:11 pm

I had read that there is an aero advantage for installing a chin spoiler on most cars, and many new cars have them, even F150's. However, on the leaf with the smooth underpan I figured it might not make a huge difference, but I order some rubber material anyway. total cost was $14 for a 100" section of 1.5" rubber spoiler material, that and a few stainless screws I had laying around. I don't care enough to do an A-B-A-B economy test, which would take half a day, but on looks alone it might be worth it.

Looks good! Do you have any pics from farther back? I'd be interested in this just to protect the bottom of the bumper from scuffs and parking blocks.

A little overcast today. I think the same material would work well on the sides of the car too, the ebay listings show this and it looks good.

this looks pretty good, especially for a 15$ upgrade. Has anyone else found other front lip options? The aftermarket tesla model 3 front lip is good for like 6% range, so figuring out something like this for a Leaf seems possibly worthwhile. That thing also costs 600+$

Old ecomodder.com trick is to use plastic lawn edging.
It's really cheap, flexible, sun light resistant. Just have to attach it some how.

i guess to back up my quote, it is 6% less drag, which is only somewhat correlated to range: https://unpluggedperformance.com/produc ... r-model-3/

range is up 13% at highway speeds if you do the front lip, spoiler and lowering springs: https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/18/un ... at-70-mph/

enough going down that rabbit hole though.

the 15$ mod for the Leaf is not likely to do anything near that but it is also 50x cheaper. Ultimately i revived the thread to poke at others who might have seen / fit front lips from other cars onto the leaf.
