What happens in Germany if March 20, 2015, is a sunny day?

Mon Sep 08, 2014 11:30 am

That's the day that all of Germany will be shrouded in a partial solar eclipse.
The German power grid operators are dreading March 20, 2015. On this day Germany will see a partial solar eclipse during the morning. Should there be no clouds in the sky at this time, all solar power generating systems all over the country would be feeding in drastically less power into the grid in just a matter of minutes – and the grids would become dangerously destabilized.
One proposal on the table is to disallow PV feed-ins on that day to prevent the grid from collapsing.

Hopefully they don't do that and will instead pursue a technical solution.

In any case, it should be an interesting experiment which has never been carried out on such a scale. I expect we will learn something we did not previously know.

Same thing will happen as it does every morning and evening.
Just political fear mongering to push some agenda.
Yes Y2K deja-vu all over again.

Will check in again on March 21.

Not so. The change in production will happen about 50 times faster than normal daily changes.

It'll be another normal day in Germany. PV is not their only power generation system - on that day they'll also have nuclear, natural gas, coal, and wind. They'll also have hydrogen, battery, CAES at least for storage.

I agree with the others - this is political/old-energy fear mongering.

Hey now - don't diss Y2K - that was real! A whole lot of people worked their butts off before the 31st. I was a USAF systems administrator at the time and we had the plan to fix the problems, and two back-up plans in case it failed. And most of the military sysadmins (and I suspect most of the civilians as well) were on duty through the night to respond it necessary.

That business is somewhat like a cloud operator - nobody notices all the calm days, but they certainly raise hell when all the hacked pictures hit the web. ;)

but there was no there there; as in there was no problem to fix.
it never materialized. it is not as if all those plans to fix the problem were needed. they just went away.

(as an aside, i wish i had a nickel for every dollar the USAF has wasted, and not just on hardware that cant fly an hour without 100X that in down time. I could buy manhattan.)

Yeah I had to fly out of state to a datacenter so I could play "Omega Man" in the World Collapse. I drank coffee, had some Pizza, and dutifully monitored systems until I got the call: "umm.... you can probably go home now".

To be fair, there was some necessary work done prior to the cutover to get rid of longstanding bugs. But if I had to guess at the ratio of useful work to CYA busy-work it was probably 1 part in 100. Served to forestall the dot-com bust for another year though.
I noticed you're still working with polymers.
