I found an too good to be true deal on a Leaf in North Augusta, SC on AutoTrader.com, but I'm too far away to check it out myself. It's a 2013 SL with 2.2k miles for only $17k. It was in an accident and the front-end had to be rebuilt :? . I'm hoping someone in the area could check it out and If you don't buy it yourself, I will if it checks out well.

I test drove a Leaf last week and want to get my own. There's a lack of Leafs available in my area, Virginia Beach, and the dealers don't seem willing to make any great lease deals so I've decided to look for a used 2012 SL to buy, but I found this while looking.

Most AAA offices have a list of approved service centers that will perform a pre-purchase inspection (this list usually includes dealers as well as independents). If the car has no issues the seller should have no problem driving it to one of your choosing for the inspection. You simply pay the shop for the inspection over the phone and you'll have your answer.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realize those services were available.

I decided to pass on this car, since it will be my only car I don't want the increased risk of problems, but for someone looking for a Leaf as a second car this could be a great deal.

I'm glad you had second-thoughts on the pre-wrecked Leaf. That's why it's so cheap, but you'll pay for it in resale value even if it wasn't a salvage, as the CarFax will likely have an entry on it.

If you're willing to search a long way for a Leaf, why not email some dealers in say the DC area for some quotes, and have them ship the car to you?

I've narrowed down my list to what I'm willing to pay, but am having trouble finding anything nearby, even up to DC. I figure some better deals will pop up near the end of December or in January once the 2014's come out.

What I'm looking for:
-Buy used 2012 SL for $18,000 or less
-Take over a 2012 SL lease for $250/month or less
-2 year Lease on a 2013 SV (w/ QC) or SL for a max of $250 or $300 per month w/ <$2000 out the door
-Not Red; Blue is a last resort.

I need to start contacting dealers farther away; the dealers in my immediate area are not willing to go this low... yet.

My goal is to match or beat the current cost of owning and operating my 2009 Nissan Maxima, which I love, but I'm willing to part with to get an EV. My wife doesn't like the idea very much and we had agreed to upgrade her car next, so spending more than my current level for transportation would put me in the "dog house". I also love my Maxima and personally can't bring myself to part with the luxury (first job gift to myself w/ every option) and power if it also means I'm going to be spending more money; helping the enviroment and not buying gas are just enough incentive to cover the "downgrade". Leasing a 2013 SL will definitely cost more, but the leather and nicer rims will make my wife happier, so I'm willing to spend a little extra on that and hope for forgiveness.
