Our Nineth Year of Gatherings has concluded.

Link forward to our Tenth Year thread:
http://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=30234

Our LEAF group has become an extended family, with some evolving
with the times, now arriving in other EVs, including Rav4EV, Tesla S,
Tesla X, Tesla 3, BMW i3, and occasionally an iMev or Coda.
As with any good family, we welcome and enjoy this "growing up",
since it enriches the group, and provides us all with a better
perspective of the future. So, the LEAF title for the Gathering
evolved to "LEAF & EV" until we think of something better.

Join us for a Saturday morning breakfast buffet at Hometown Buffet, the Golden
Corral, or some other location (see below), ... or for some other special event.

Nominally, we Gather from about 8:00 until about 11:00 AM, and some will arrive
at about 8:00 and some may stay later, if there is enough interest. Some come
for just a while, but have to leave early because they have a "real" life. :D

I usually try to arrive by 8:00, and I am usually among the last to leave.
HTB opens for Breakfast at 8:00, and transitions to their Lunch menu at about 11:00.

Usually, we LEAF/EV-Gather on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month,
but that is often modified to fit the holidays or other events in the month.
Occasionally we have Local Clusters for special events (**) at different locations.

NOTE: Typically, we alternate between the Golden Corral in the City of Industry early in the month, and the Hometown Buffet in Santa Ana later in the month (see addresses below).

As always, Suggestions Welcome
Thanks everyone for your support and help.

Welcome to the start of our NINETH YEAR of EV Gatherings.

Thanks to you all for your continued friendship and support, your suggestions and help, and your splendid attendance.

You ALL are what makes this group special, an extended family that cares about each other, and about saving the Earth, if possible.

Our next Gathering is on Saturday September 8th, 2018 (skipping the extra week because of Labor Day Weekend on the 1st).

We will meet for breakfast about 8 AM (although they open at 7:30), or whenever you can get there ... at the Golden Corral in the City of Industry, about 4 miles West of the 57 and 60 intersection.

We should be celebrating the delivery of a newborn ... Tesla Model 3D.

I look forward to seeing you (maybe twice) that day ... my Tesla S85 just got a replacement traction motor, since it was "whining" a little bit.

I will attend the christening this Saturday.

Anyone want Easter Lily bulbs? I think these are pink. Dug them up but have no place to put them.

Edit: They are probably Amaryllis.

I will be at breakfast in City of Industry tomorrow.

Remodel is progressing well. Here is link to latest pictures, including removal of fireplace and chimney, addition of new window where the fireplace used to be.

Last night I came home to discover garage door opener would not open garage more than a few inches. I had to leave my car in the driveway, but I was able to get HPWC cable under the door to charge it overnight. I thought there was just some gadget failure on the door, but this morning I discovered that the main torsion spring that balances the sectional door had broken into two pieces. The garage door guy is coming Monday. In the meantime the workers put a two-by-four block under the door so I can leave the cable in place to charge in my driveway.

I am grateful the spring broke while my car was outside.

Tom said he has software 2018.34 ...

Does anybody else have the new Enter-PIN-to-Start-Driving feature (a Fob-Security fix)?

If so, in what software update version, please?

See you Saturday at the Hometown Buffet in Santa Ana on 17th Street, two blocks East of the I-5 freeway.

Cheers, Gary

EV Trip report to Santa Barbara
3 days, 2 nights.
Even with all the latest SC construction, lack of Supercharger in immediate SB area complicated trip. Gap between Oxnard and Buelton.

Day 1
Lunch at Reagan Library. Great view, decent salad.
Charged at new (for me) SC at Thousand Oaks - E. Nice upscale mini-mall. Decent food options.
topped off charge at Oxnard SC.
Stayed at Milo Hotel on beach. No Destination charge. Two other motels in area did have chargers, but I had stayed at Milo before.

Day 2
Side day trip to Ojai. To enable this trip comfortably, I did 3 charges:

Level-3 EvGo at La Cumbre plaza. Two units, each CHAdeMO or CCS. Busy site, both units in use when I arrived, but one car left within 10 min of my arrival. Charged 35 min. Needed to call to get charge started, even though operator knew who I was so my RFID card had been read properly. She converted me to new plan with 45 min per session, no 5$ fee just to plug in. Much better.
CHAdeMO connector looked worn, but worked fine. CCS connector did not look worn.
A Model 3 arrived just as I was leaving, testifying to heavy demand.

At Ojai I had lunch, visited art galleries. Plugged into Chargepoint Level-2 for 2 hours. In 7 years of driving electric, this might have been one of my longest Level 2 charges during the day. I saw only a few other EVs in this area. Area probably still slowly recovering from loss of business during the fire.

Second night at hotel I learned that they were equipped to run an extension cord to charge me on Level-1 overnight. I got 36 miles in 12 hours. I had nice discussion with hotel manager, alerting him to Tesla's Destination Charge opportunity, in which they will send one or two free HPWC to almost any motel or hotel that asks for one. He seemed interested.

On last day I did 2 hour 2-mile guided walking tour of LotusLand. I recommend this if you like plants. You need reservations. We had 3 groups of 7 people each for tour.

On return trip, I did SC at Thousand Oaks - West. This is a large Mall, with some very nice food options. I did not need much charge.
With the addition of these two Thousand Oaks SC locations, my total number of SC locations I have used in CA has grown to 37.
Together with
9 SC in NV,
5 SC in UT,
3 SC in AZ,
3 SC in ID
2 SC in NM,

My total SCE locations is now 59.

We had a really nice Gathering last Saturday at the Hometown Buffet in Santa Ana. We had around 12 people, including Linda Z ... recovering well after her unfortunate fall.

Linda, very good to see you again!

Next Gathering, 6 Oct 2018, at the Golden Corral in City of Industry, the Fullerton Exit from freeway 69, about 4 miles West of freeway 57.

Try Navigate [to] Golden Corral in City of Industry.

I texted that info to Harry.

Is this procedure helpful for jumping out of a moving vehicle before it goes over a cliff?

EV Gatherings are scheduled for the 6th at GC and for the 20th at HTB in October 2018.

Holiday EV Gathering Schedule:

3rd and 17th November
1st and 15th December

Then a 3-week jump over Christmas and New Year to:

5th and 19th January, 2019

Of somebody wants or "needs" a Special Gathering during the holidays or the 3-week gap, please suggest something, and I will talk to the management about getting it on the schedule, or ... just having a "custom" get-together.

Cheers to All, Gary

Special-day possibilities:

Lunch & Dinner at HTB on Wednesday 26 Dec
Arrive 3 to 3:30 pm to get in at lunch price.
Then, dinner starts at 4, with Turkey and other meats carved.

Sunday breakfast Dec 30th at HTB

If you want either of these, or have another suggestion, either text me or post here.

I just installed received and installed Version 9.0. I have not tried any new features yet.

To Gary and Gene: I had previously reported that my Cat6 cable in my new sealed wall could not pass signal although it passed continuity tests on all 8 pins. After replacing connectors on both ends, I now have this Cat6 cable running at 100BaseT level. It will not run at 1000BaseT, but it connects to my solar inverter that only has a 100BaseT port, so 100 is perfectly acceptable. The cable run is about 30', A much longer run, about 65', runs fine at 1000BaseT in the attic. In the future, this experience suggests running Cat6 cable through a wall is tricky, and should be tested before closing the wall. It also suggests it is risky to reuse a Cat6 connector.

We had really nice Gatherings at GC and HTB this month, with about a dozen people attending each event. More and more M3s are showing up. Nancy even let me drive HER Model 3!

Our next Gatherings are at GC on 3 Nov 2018 and at HTB on 17 Nov 2018.

We will add a December Special Event:
Lunch & Dinner at HTB on Wednesday 26 Dec 2018 to close out the 2018 year.

Arrive 3 to 3:30 pm if you want to get in at the lunch price. Then, the HTB dinner starts at 4, with Turkey (normally carved on Wed and Sunday for dinner) and other meats carved.

I realize that many, who have real lives and floods of family (fof) would already be committed on the 26th, but at least Tom and I plan to be there. You/We might bring ffg (friends, family, or guests) just to experience something different.

Ho, ho, ho ... Gary

For Tesla drivers, here's a video of the new "navigate on autopilot" in action. 2018.42.2. Really exciting stuff! I just downloaded the new software tonight and can't wait to try it tomorrow. If I weren't so tired right now, I'd go take it for a spin.

After our EV Gathering on November 17th, we have only 3 more Gatherings this year, all 3 in December, 2018. Note the special DINNER Gathering on Wednesday, Dec 26th at HTB.

--- 100th month (Dec 2018) Gatherings ---
Gathering #100a: 1 Dec 2018 at Golden Corral in City of Industry for breakfast.

Gathering #100b: 15 Dec 2018 at the HTB on 17th in Santa Ana for breakfast.

Special EOY Dinner Gathering #100c: 26 Dec 2018 for Dinner at HTB in Santa Ana, at 3:30 pm (you must actually BUY your entry BEFORE 3:59 pm, to get in for their Lunch price). Dinner, with carved meats (usually includes turkey on Wednesday), starts at 4pm. If you can, join our End Of Year and Christmas / Holiday Cheer celebration.

Tesla's v9 software for the Model 3 is up to 2018.42.4 now.

Version 2018.42.3 includes
1. possibly ?? attempting to handle on-ramp merging, but not sure how well, or what it will do, if many cars are blocking you.
2. doing a fairly good job of allowing others to merge onto the freeway if you happen to be in the slow lane, at least slowing your car if necessary to let the other car merge ahead of you.
3. On a "freeway", if activated and on a Route, the Steering Assist attempts to change lanes (or suggest lane changes) as necessary to navigate freeway interchanges and getting onto the routed exit ramp.

For cars with AP hardware, even without AutoPilot purchased or activated, there are still significant safety advantages. With AP Gen 2.0 or Gen 2.5 hardware (multi-camera), the display trys to depict surrounding vehicles.

HOWEVER, please do not get over-confident in the "AutoPilot" functions. Maintain full control at all times.

Hi Gary, I’ll be arriving late for the dec 15 breakfast but looking forward to seeing you guys. Can you bring the dongle buss connector thingimajigie so I can try my WiFi obd2 adapter and TM-Spy?
